We recently adopted a 12 week old kitten from our Humane Society and I am wondering how to feed her. I have had cats in the past and I have a 13 year old female now and she is about 5 lbs. overweight. I never thought I was over feeding her but I don't want to make the same mistake with this kitten and wondered for those of you who have cats do you feed them mostly canned or mostly dried or a combination of both. Also, what is a good brand of food to use? The Humane Society had been feeding her Purina One dry. Thanks for any suggestions! I also forgot how much energy a kitten has, but boy is she fun!!

I have always fed my kittens Kitten Chow the first year, and of course canned food is very important to help avoid problems such as kidney disease later in life. Fancy Feast is a good brand, and Petsmart has canned foods especially formulated for kittens. Remember, she needs fresh water at all times, and have fun as you fall in love.

I agree. My Vet recommends dry kibble available to free feed and a portion of wet food twice a day.
Bless you for giving this baby a furever home

I recommend ProPlan. They make canned food for kittens. This is the brand that I feed my 5 cats and its the brand that my vet feeds her cats.
Congrats on the new kitty!! Almost makes me want to adopt #6! Almost, but not....I'm stopping at 5.
Enjoy! Cats are such a blessing to your life!!!

I always feed a super premium food. I use Wellness, but Blue Buffalo is good, too. I agree that using both canned and dry is the best way to go. I believe they recommend feeding kitten food until they're a year old, but you could go by what the manufacturer recommends on the can or bag.

@Lori Kaye I wanted to also mention to you that my Kitty has also had a bit of a weight issue. I switched her food to Purina Healthy Weight and she likes it and she did lose weight. She eats a bit more of it, but she is now closer to her ideal weight. She has bright eyes and her coat is shiney and soft, so I know she gets good nutrition.

I feed my cat a combination of Fresh Pet which is a grain free semi soft food that needs refrigeration and a grain free dry cat food. Rachel Ray just came out with one and Purina makes a grain free called Beyond. My cat is 8 years old and loves his food, but he has gained 3 lbs. since he's on it. I don't know if that's because he's not as active in this heat or what, I only feed him the amount they recommend. I also want to say, since I've been feeding my cat grain free his breath is no longer bad.

I started my baby boy kitten Teddy on Hill's Science Diet. I adopted him from the Humane Society. Yesterday he did not eat much and today he was not eating at all so I went out and bought a Sheba singles - he devoured that neat little portion. I have had Teddy for 3 weeks and he has been to the vet 3X. In the past our Cats where other peoples pets or where from a Farm. A girlfriend told me that small kittens from the shelters seem to have a lot of issues. I am worn out with worry. Prayers for Teddy.
