Re: What joint supplement do you give your elderly dogs?

My almost 10 year old Airedale has been on Dasuquin with MSM her entire life.  WHen we brought her to our amazing vet as a puppy,  the vet recommended that we do that if we could afford to rather than wait until she actually needed it.   OUr girl runs around like she is 5 not going on 10!     Several years ago when my friend's cat could no long jump on her bed and was having issues, I suggested it (also available for cats) and it changed her life in a very short period.   Great product.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm also a great believer in MSM since I take it too.

Recently I've been giving my Schipperke Bone Broth PupSicles and he just loves those. Maybe you could sprinkle some MSM into the PupSicle mold and your dog would love it that way.

I order my dog-friendly bone broth from Canada - it's kinda hard to find any without added onions and bad stuff for dogs. I got the molds from Amazon in the form of dog bones and paws - very cute!

Re: What joint supplement do you give your elderly dogs?

I use Cosequin/Dasequin - whatever the most 'beefed' up one is:  I go for the strongest 'cause it's such a pita getting them to partake.

I've learned to break it up in crumbs and put it on with his food.  I've also learned to disguise his food as much as possible - they smell it and we don't have a chance of getting them to eat it, I find.

Eddy loves all foods.  Pasta/sauce with cheese works as wel as watermelon and fet over his kibble works.  You've just got to get so many 'good' smells mixed in with the'bad' smell that the good smells luck out and the supplement it eaten.  But, it it a daily pita!Woman LOL

Oh, if she watches you prepare the food, sneak it into the bowl:  Eddy watches and observes what's going onto my plate as well as his!

This is what I used to use for my little dog.  She wouldn't eat any kind of supplements that advertised they were chewable.  But she willingly gobbled this up every day.  And it helped her.

Synovi  G4 Joint Health by Bayer. Soft chews, chicken flavor. Chewy has it, maybe Amazon.

[ Edited ]

My dog (a pug mix) was allergic to many of the over the counter joint supplements as many are derived from shellfish.  We gave her two things that she did not react to and helped her:

Redd Remedies Joint Health Support Original.  They are in capsules that can be opened and sprinkled on food (we gave our dog homemade wet food so it mixed in nicely) or given in some cheese or pill pocket.  Available via Amazon and other retailers.  This is not specifically for dogs, but was recommended to us. She had one pill a day.

Animal Essentials Joint Support.  This is a liquid tincture that you measure with the provided eye dropper and squirt on their food.  We gave her some with breakfast and some with dinner as noted on the bottle.  This is available through Chewy and other retailers.  If you give this a try be sure to shop around as price per ounce varies wildly.

She happily ate her meals with these mixed in.

Best of luck to you as you try to find something that helps.

Re: What joint supplement do you give your elderly dogs?

I give K9 glucosamine.  I first started this for my older lab, and now give to Gabriel my current lab.  Hes only 2 yrs, but I got him at 9 weeks old with a broken hip, and my vet suggested we keep him on supplements.   After researching, I found this brand has a high amount of glucosamine and much more.  I also give to my 16 yr old Maltese that has weak hind legs.  I buy from Chewy.

I honestly don't know if any of these supplements really help, unless I stop them, then see if the condition gets worse.   As far as Gabriel,  he'll always have an unnatural gait because his hip bone is out of the socket,  but he's as athletic as any healthy dog.  My vet is also amazed.
