I just read a very sad story about a family that woke up to find their dog very ill from eating a homemade salt dough ornament that was on their Christmas tree. They rushed it to the vet but it suffered neurological damage with a 107 fever and had to be humanely euthanized. Everyone be careful with your dogs (and cats) while the decorations are up. Happy Holidays!

Very sad - and scary. I wonder what was toxic in the salt dough ornament. Just too much salt?

Poor dog! Feel so sorry for the family.

I saw that on Facebook. I knew how the story would end and couldn't make myself read it. So sad. I don't know what salt dough ornaments are.

Puting FOOD ornaments on a Christmas tree? OMG! As a dog owner, THAT is something I would never do.
That just doesn't make sense to me.

Martha Stewart home-made dog biscuits
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup low-sodium canned chicken stock, plus more for brushing
Salt Dough Ornamment Recipe
Yep, I feel sorry for the dog. Sad, there's such a thin line between animal abuse and human stupidity.
Disgusting.

Wow, that's a really harsh statement. I've owned and cared for and rescued animals pretty much all my life and I never knew that salt dough ornaments were toxic if eaten by a pet.
Didn't you just post recently about your own pet being poisoned and not knowing what to do and asked questions here instead of rushing your dog to the vet?

Yep, I took my dog to the vet .. just like these people did. But, I didn't poison my dog. That's the difference. Like I said, I would never put FOOD ornaments made of dog biscuit ingredients on a Chrismas tree. I'v done some dumb things in my life, but that is not one of them.
I feel sorry for the dog.

Right. Well so does the family that lost their pet!
Good grief. Instead of patting yourself on the back (don't strain yourself by the way), understand that MOST people would have immediately taken their pet to a vet, not posted a question on a forum and waited for answers.
