What's hard for me right now is that I cannot afford to take my cats to the vet.  My oldest one doesn't really need to go but my younger one, Sal, should really go in. I suspect he either had diabetes or a thyroid problem because he drinks just tons of water. But he always has. I did mention this the last time I was able to take him in and they ran tests (except for diabetes!) and nothing was really wrong. In this small town there is only one vet clinic and they are extraordinarily expensive. You can't get out of there for under $100 (that's for OV and shots)  and I know with tests I would be looking at $200 or more. I know that by not taking him I could be shortening his life but I just can't afford it.

@Whosits   You might want to consider getting a CareCredit credit card.  It is designed to help people pay their medical and veterinary bills.  You go to their website carecredit dot com and apply.  They will give you approval (or not) within seconds.  They'll give you a limit and you can continue to use it as long as you stay within that limit.

Pets are expensive.   I've dealt with all kinds of grief, people & pets so potential death of a pet does not hinder me from owning one.

  I only have cats now but I've had dogs.   My pets are a part of my life.    When we talk about memories, the pets are always included.    "Remember the time......." usually includes something about the kids & the dogs.

With cats, you have food, litter box supplies, vet visits.

I'm trying to live on my SS, as much as I would love to have a dog, I  just really can't afford it.

Can you drive to the next town?  Things may be cheaper with a little bit of a ride.  We've had diabetic cats and once you know this may be the case (and a blood glucose draw is inexpensive compared to an entire blood panel), the supplies can be very affordable if purchased online and, again, those BG draws are not expensive at all. You can even do your own BG monitoring at home.

As @beach-mom says, Care Credit is an option. You can also Google for financial assistance in your area to help with expenses.

@Whosits - @NickNack actually recommended Care Credit, but as @Sammycat1 said there are lots of options. Please don't give up! Many times one person will start a fundraising group for this purpose, and the staff will contribute to this fund.

Think about what @Sammycat1 said and go outside of your town. That might make a difference. There are ways to get help. Good luck!

@Lali1

Yes, very sad.

When I've been in the lobby of our vets' office, whenever you see people with tears, you just always know they're going through sad times.  I feel for everyone during those times.

I will certainly park in a differnt spot next time I go. It was easy to figure out what was going on. The whole family was there and they all went inside. I was not allowed to go in along with most others, I even cried about it when I went to bed that night. Of course it reminded me of Fender our chihuahua we lost in July.
