@wvumountiefan, i am sorry to reply so late i missed this...My little shihtzu Riley went into a diabetic coma his sugar was over 700.We didnt see it coming.He survived and thrives almost5 years later he will be 10 in nov. He went blind  suddenly even after his sugar was controlled in few weeks later,damage was done.He had cataract sugery  and was perfect for almost  3 1|2 years snd has had a detached retina for almost  a year partially, other eye was fine.  They do so well on insulin and you know strict diet im sure ,my babys insulin has never moved up  a ll these years 5 units 2x daily . if you have any  question i would be honored  to help ..
