So last night I attempted letting Buddy sleep in the bed. We have a queen size bed and I don't take up much room so there's plenty of space for all. I don't think my husband was too keen on the idea -- or maybe he was just surprised -- but that was the least of my worries. I don't think Buddy felt too comfortable about being there ... he seemed a little nervous at first. I put a sheet down for him to lay on but he would not stay at the foot of the bed. He kept coming up near my legs to lay next to me. So I got the Malden Mills blanket he likes so much and put that at the foot of the bed. Nope, he wasn't going for that.
So with all the movement going on between me and the dog my husband started complainging that he was not getting any sleep. REALLY????? So I took myself, Buddy, and the blanket and went in my daughter's old room. Just a twin bed so not much room. The poor dog was so confused by now. I sat there with him for a while and put the blanket down and was soothing him until he calmed down and pretty soon he drifted off. I tried laying down really, really quiet so as not to disturb him. Pretty soon there he was, right behind my legs. We both drifted off. At least I could stretch my legs out and I did sleep most of the night. Better than the couch situation. And it was not even a full-length couch, it's a love seat so it was really cramped.
I love him so much.

Good to hear you got to sleep most of the night! It might take Buddy a little bit longer to get used to being on your bed, but I'll bet that once he does, he'll love it!
If you still would like to have him sleep with you and your husband (and if your husband is still willing to try that!), may I suggest that you might try putting Buddy in that bed during the day sometimes, not just when you all are ready to sleep. Get into bed with him, with his blanket arrangements too, get him calmed down, and just lay there and pretend to sleep for a while. Let him just get used to that new situation before your husband joins the two of you. It's hard to introdue a new routine into an older dog's life, especially if they're not feeling up to snuff.
Pleasant dreams!

I think Buddy likes have his Mom all to himself. Maybe if you two took a deep-dish nap this weekend on one of the beds that would help, too. Once I practically lost all blood flow to one side of my body because my sick cat finally was able to rest...and there was no way I was shifting position after that!

Does Buddy like to be brushed and/or combed? Our cairn loves that and I often brush or comb him in the bed and it seems to calm and soothe him. Perhaps you could try this to get him used to being in the bed. He may also like belly rubs which will help relax him.
(((Hugs))) to both of you.

Geezerette, Sammycat, and Anika, thank you all for your suggestions. I will certainly try them all.

Karnerblue,
Hoping that you had a good nights sleep with Buddy last night. It may take some getting used to since it was never allowed before. It probably won't take long to become the "norm" though.
We have always allowed our dogs to sleep with us. Imagine 2 Old English (over 100#s each) in bed with 2 adults. One would curl up between our heads! The other would lay across our feet! You just get used to it. We actually bought a twin bed to put at the bottom of our bed to accomodate them....the things we do for our pets!!! We only have one now and he sleeps between us with his head up with ours!
Maybe you should take a nap with your baby this afternoon and catch up on much needed rest!!

I hope all of you are able to get proper rest, as that will be key in household harmony and will help Buddy to feel better. I will pray for you to be led to the answer.
