Re: That Schmoo, he is one tough kitty fighter -- 2.0

@Sammycat1   You will have many people with you and your husband in spirit on Tuesday.  As you know, I just went through many Vet visits and then on to visits at the ER and the Vet School with my Frankie.  While frustrating at that time to sit in the car and not actually be in the room with Frankie and the Vet, the Vets did spend a great deal of time talking with me on the phone after the exam.  I never felt rushed with my questions with any of them.  They were all very compassionate and understanding.  It was as smooth as it possibly could be under the circumstances.

I hope it will be the same way for you.

Thank for your kind and encouraging words--yes, I remember well your experience with Frankie. We've been through it at our own vet. But here's the difference:  there will be no bringing Frankie out for euthanasia and no ability for us to say goodbye and hold her one last time if she starts to fail.

We would have that option at her current vet. That won't happen at the specialty vet. But I'm trying to banish that thought from my brain right now.

@Sammycat1   I wondered if they would let you come in for end of life good-byes.  I'm so sad that they wouldn't do that for you.  That doesn't make sense to me.

Nope. But she must go to this vet - he's a specialist and it's her only real hope.  Our current vet, although fabulous, does not have dental x-rays and everything she'll need for this surgery. If it comes to this for Frankie--and I shudder that it will--I'll beg them to let me in. We'll be masked and gloved. Cat Sad

@Sammycat1   I completely understand that she must go to this Vet.  I'll pray for a good outcome.

Good morning @Sammycat1

I'm so glad the meds are helping Sweet Frankie.  I feel your pain of not being able to accompany Frankie for her surgery.  It will probably be an anxious & concerning time for you & Mr. @Sammycat1 .  Just know so many of us will be praying & thinking of you during this time for the best possible outcome.

Meanwhile, I know you'll cherish this time with your Dear Angel Frankie.  I hope loads of sunshine will brighten & help you all relax during this time.

Blessings & hugs being sent to you all  ..   Heart

@Sammycat1

Love Eskimo and Pooh Bear's pictures and I'm so glad they've recovered.

i check in daily on Frankie and will keep her in prayer. I hate you can't go in to the hospital with her, but such is our times. She knows how much she is loved by you. I know that will be with her. We will pray she carries your and Mr Sammycat with her during her procedure. She will know your spirit is right there.

Love and many prayers for this girl and for her mom and dad!

Wednesday report:  Good afternoon, FOF (Friends of Frankie), an offshoot of the Schmoo Prayer Warriors.

Your messages bring us to tears--good tears--at having so many on our side during this tough time. Early last evening after a long surgery to save a dog suffering from bloat, our most excellent vet called to check on Frankie and we told him the pain picture was severe, in spite of the buprenex.

He made the decision to give her a short course of oral prednisolone to help with her inflammation-causing mouth pain--it will shoot her blood sugar up a bit, but we can control that. The injectable kind was too much a risk; the pills, less a risk. Steroids in diabetic cats are usually a no-no...they can push the diabetes and thus push or spark latent conditions like developing heart disease from the diabetes. But he did not want her heading into potential surgery from a position of weakness...and, as you know, severe pain can severely weaken, even kill, someone.

So at 10:30 p.m., I met him at the animal hospital.  He gave me a packet of prednisolone and a few other instructions and said, "Start right away."

This is the kind of person you want to go into battle with--the one who did so time and again with Schmoo and all our pets. I knew that, but last night, it was a comforting reminder that he's in the fight with us and has our back.

It's taking the edge off already. Frankie's doing a little better today, even acting like a cat. And that's always the litmus test. So she'll go into surgery considerably stronger on Tuesday as a result--and, soon, we pray, she'll back at her beloved TV, cozying up to the likes of William Shatner as Captain Kirk, oo la la:

@Sammycat1

First, I just have to comment about the excellent taste that Frankie has.  The original Star Trek.  And Captain Kirk, to boot. 😉

I'm so glad to hear that the poor girl is responding favorably to the pain medication.  I'm sure that will relax her enough to regain some of her strength back before her surgery.  You all will remain in my prayers, of course.  I know that it must be extremely stressful for you and Mr. Sammycat enduring the wait until surgery with the outcome somewhat in doubt.  It sounds like she will be in excellent hands.
