Re: That Schmoo, he is one tough kitty fighter -- 2.0

[ Edited ]

Monday report:  It's good to see members of the Schmoo Family rallying around one another.  It's what we do.

I thought perhaps you could all use a passage from the Schmoo book about the man cat who brought us together in the first place.  In it, I'm talking about two men from San Diego who started as regular visitors of mine on the battlefield and became dear friends (albeit with a wise guy wit)--just like all of you--from so very far away. Initially in this passage I'm talking about them sending DH and I a sympathy card when our collie Fergus died, then it ends up being about Schmoo.  The last paragraph is how we feel about all of you, too:

A week after Fergus died, a thick, greeting-card-sized envelope arrived in the mail.  “Who do we know in San Diego?” DH asked.

I smiled.  “It can only be one family.  Open it.”

As he read the card itself, then turned it every which way to see the sentiments scrawled by each member of the family, then the poem they’d printed out, the tears he had struggled to hold back every day broke free again.

“But they don’t know me.”  He held up the tailored-made sheaf of condolences, including a poem they’d enclosed, his hand shaking.

“Oh, they know you better than you think,” I said as I stood to drape my arms around his neck.  He nodded and handed me the card.

There were none of the usual platitudes.  They thought long and hard about what they wrote: about Fergus himself, about what he must have meant to us, about how it felt to have him torn away, all too soon.  Their sympathy was specific and, therefore, genuine. It was the blood of each person’s heart laid plain on the page.

So when Schmoo’s health began to give way, their contact – mainly Mike’s – remained steadfast and original in concern.  From more than 2,600 miles away, across three time zones, there they were, as if they lived across the street. The bluster and acerbic wit flew from them and constancy of deep concern took their place. The dark often magnified my sorrow and fear over Schmoo’s condition; they cloyed me, they clawed at me after sundown.  And somehow in the night far away along a different curvature of the earth, up and over mountain ranges, across great expanses of plains and bridged over river after mighty river, Mike sensed it – because every morning after I had a night like that, an email waited for me, encouraging me to keep fighting alongside my Schmoo ...

@Sammycat1 - Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We have had a very rough week. Snuggles developed a very bad URI and I rushed him to the hospital last night. The tumor in his belly is most likely inoperable. We may be at the end. I am trying to hold it together but it's so hard. I didn't think we were there yet ...

Re: That Schmoo, he is one tough kitty fighter -- 2.0

Hi Dear Friends,  Sammy, Mom, the J's and myself are all just hanging in this week.  Nothing new and exciting, so that is a good thing.  Mom goes back next Friday for a blood workup and we will see how things did in 4 weeks.  Now she will have every 4 week checkups which is a good thing.  Big J Mister Jake is having an allergy flare, so he is heading to the vet this afternoon to get perked up and little J Joey is holding his own.  And me, well, I havent had a nervous breakdown so all is good Smiley Happy

Blessing Dear Friends, have the best weekend you possibly can!

@Sammycat1

How thoughtful of you to think of me!  Yes, I do pop in here every once in a while, although lately I haven't been up to snuff so I haven't posted.  (Nothing as serious as many of the other Schmoosters, just a long-term situation requiring me to extert some self-discipline to eat right and keep my immune system up better.)  I have been keeping up with the ups and downs of your dynamic duo, as well as enjoying, although sometimes tearfully, your book exerpts.

@nycgrl , I am so sorry to hear about poor Snuggles.  I don't know what is worse: knowing the end of your time with him may be near, or knowing he is struggling.  I can only I imagine your torment right now.  Please know that you and Snuggles are in my prayers every night.

@Shop Till you Drop , Well, no nervous breakdown is good!  You and your mother are also in my prayers.  Positive thoughts have literally been shown to work miracles--even the doctors have to admit that!

My best to you all, two legged and four...
