My girl Spaniels are age 12, and I would never think of adopting a new pet while they're still alive -- whether cat or dog.   Anyone who stops here to visit with their dog is tramatized by their constant barking.

 

I had a female Persian before the dogs joined our household, and they tolerated her bad disposition only because the dogs grew up her.   

 

Had a stray tom cat (kitten) come live with us for only 2 years, he playfully pounced on them constantly, they despised him and were miserable by his existence.   ;-)
