My niece and her family just got a new puppy...prob. 6 weeks old. Today is the pups first day home with them and they discovered the puppy has fleas. What is the best treatment for a young dog like that? Thanks.

Call a veterinarian and ask, 6 weeks is young for flea control.

I think the best idea would be to call the vet. Maybe they would recommend a bath with mild soap? As the dog gets older I would never use a flea collar.

Six weeks is too young to leave their mothers. Better at 8-10.
At that age, no flea killers.
Depending on the pup's condition I'd give it a gentle bath with regular dog shampoo. Fleas will hide out in dog's ears when they get a bath, so I always put some cotton in there to help prevent that.
Or manually remove the fleas.
It's best to get that done right away before the fleas establish residence in the house.

A trip to the Vets office.

@sarahpanda, the pup needs immediate attention. Fleas on an animal that young can cause rapid severe, even life threatening anemia due to blood loss.
If it is not possible for niece to contact a local vet or emergency clinic for advice and she knows someone that has an autoship plan with Chewy they have a vet that will answer questions at no charge. I don't know what charges might be if not an autoship subscriber.

I agree with others here ~ 6 weeks is too young to be taken from mama dog.
I would call a vet first thing!

My vet gave Gabriel Next guard when he was a puppy, and it worked great. Now, ill only use it if I see a flea. No side effects and does the job.

Puppy needs to be examined by a vet, not just for fleas but for any disorder and all of it's vaccinations. It's critical it be vaccinated for Parvo which is extremely contagious and often fatal. Of course the pup should also be wormed.

Which is to be used on puppies 8 weeks or older.
