I use this wonderful and safe car seat for small dogs. You can have it in the front seat so your dog can look at you. You attach their harness to the carseat. The seat attaches with the seat belt. They provide very good instructions. The padded back would be towards the front of the car, just like a child car seat. It is designed so the padding would fold over and protect the dog in the event of a crash. They even have a sign to put on your window that says dog on board.

Thank you @Carmie . Those bags look really nice and more cozy than the hard sided carrier I have! The mesh one looks especially nice. Easier for him to keep his eyes on me and easier for me to keep my eyes on him! I don't see myself traveling by air in the near future; however, in the event I did, it's nice it's under the seat airline approved. Thanks again.

@BunSnoop What SOONER said exactly! Dogs aren't safe just being loose in a moving car.

@BunSnoop wrote:My husband passed away a month ago today. Whenever we needed to take our dog (13 years old - 15 pounds) to the vet, I would hold my little, quite active, dog on my lap. Now that I will need to take him by myself to PetSmart for nail trimmings and to the vet for, hopefully only routine annual exams, etc., I'm trying to figure out how to do it by myself as I don't really have anyone that can go along with me each time.
I have a carrier that I suppose I could put on the front seat next to me? I think he'll be very nervous to be in it, but if there's no other way I guess I'll have to try going for short rides in the neighborhood to see how it goes.
Did I see once something like a seat belt for dogs? Is there such a thing and, if so, do you recommend it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
SO sorry for your loss. ![]()
Well, Googlefor additional ideas but yours also make sense. Teach your doggie some new tricks.
Put them on a leash, secure them somehow and drive around the block ... or whatever. You get the idea. Make a big deal of giving treats when you return.
Dogs can learn new tricks, and you need to desensitize your babe when it comes to car rides.
It's probably going to be a trial-and-error thing until you find out what works best.

When I took our dogs to the vet all I did is get out my keys. They were ready to go for a ride until they found out where they were going?
I opened the door so they could jump in the back seat. The Vet was just around the corner from where we lived.
Sorry for your loss of your DH.

@BunSnoop - DH always recommends pups be restrained by a carrier or a dog seat belt, preferably in the back seat.
He said dogs should never be loose in the car. Anything can happen, and even an abrupt stop could cause an injury.
Personally, I would talk to him or play some music to relax him. He will adjust.
It's a sad day for you, and I'm sure you're still adjusting to new ways. I'm thinking of you.
