What might be missing from you post that I am missing, or what is the vet missing....Where is the pain?? Why the sudden change?? Deafness does not hurt....I knew the reason that Savannah went on pain meds.....Any idea what is going on????
We are not even sure he is in pain.
It is hard for people to understand about him. He has no real personality. He doesn't much want to interact with us, nor did he with my father. He isn't aggrressive, but he doesn't interact. He doesn't seek us out or seem to enjoy being petted. He sometimes shrinks away from your hand. He's cute, but that's about it.
We cannot housetrain him. He doesn't walk on a leash. We got him a harness leash because it was painful to try to direct him with a leash and collar. I said we can't pull on his neck and he doesn't respond to pressure on the leash. We sometimes carry him out because he doesn't even seem to GET the concept of the leash.
He likes eating and I think he likes going outside. He will stand in the grass with the wind in his face, and I perceive him to be enjoying it. We have piddle pads around and he would walk in his waste.
In my dad's state, I don't think he understood how impaired the dog was. I now feel responsible for him and want him to have some quality of life. He's been a lot of work.

@hyacinth003If the Rimadyl is not helping then Perhaps try a different tack. It sounds more like something neurologic is going on. Deafness may just be one symptom of brain trouble. I hope you can help the little guy.

I don't think we can "fix" him, but I don't want him in pain. He's an older dog, and I can't afford an extensive neurological assessment of him. He would have needed intervention years ago. He's not a companion or enjoyable like other dogs. We are just cleaning up after him all the time. The groomer told us she may not groom him anymore if he just resists. As a Pekinese, he needs grooming! We are doing our best to give him a nice life.
We have a male Pomeranian we also took from my dad. He is like a regular dog. But he will soil in the house periodically and is now acting strange, we think from age. He has lost a lot of hearing, so we have 2 dogs with no dog protection!! We had decided no more dogs after we lost our one dog. Then my dad couldn't care for his, and we have 2 dogs. My brother and his wife wouldn't take either.
We have 8 kitties also, and we are committed to caring for all of them.
So, we do the best we can!!

I haven't read all the responses, however I will use Rimadyl on a as needed basis with my older dog. My vet compared it to giving her Advil. I could tell the difference, well worth a try.
