@sharkb8 Ridiculous and rip-off...everyone, everywhere, anyway they can...no one's really "lookin' out for us" and our best interests more than ever, these days. It is terrible to be so "taken advantage of" and that's exactly what they are doing. "Fur baby" care has become a big racket...because....they can. Sorry.
My condo doesn't allow dogs, and I'm not a cat person...but the thought of someday being somewhere I could have a dog again (grew up with one) is thwarted when I think of the cost to own a pet these days. It's cost prohibitive.

Not an area I know a lot about, but whenever I go for something like that, I always ask for an estimate.
Well, I don't know where it stands now ... did you just pay the whole bill? It not, I think trying to negotiate a reduction would be in order.
@sharkb8 Exactly what I was just thinking...I hope you didn't pay it all yet...I'd definitely try to fight it, negotiate, cry "poor mouth" as my mom used to call it and pay them $5 a month forever! Jeesh.

@sharkb8 That bill is hard to take. Maybe that is why you were able to get an appointment. He has done that to too many other people. And they have moved on to a different Vet.
It seemed every Vet visit we had was always in the $300 - $500 range and we thought that was high.
So vent away, I think you have alot to vent about. And I agree with you.

As a cat Mom for decades, I think that is a crazy price you were charged. I had a cat, Callie, who had chronic constipation and we had many trips to the vet for an enema during her 11 years. Hope your kitty is feeling better.

So what is the consensus of what is necessary for a pet's medical care now days? Are we really at the point where only upper middle class can have pets? Is there a line that can be drawn? Are pet owners going to have to start drawing it?

Happened to me....I now speak up before anything is done...I've come out with bills over $800 for basic checks. I just brought my new pup in for a check up...while there, I asked to cut his nails. I also said, if there's a charge, please don't bother, I have the tools, and have and can do it myself. It's really sad about the prices, especially at a time when everything is escalating, the wrong way.
Sorry this is happening...I tend to think, price gouging.

Then double that as I have 2 pups. Grooming too, is expensive and that runs around $120. every 3 months for each of them. They bring such joy and we manage, but so many cant and abandon their animals. Especially seniors. Its just sad.
@meem120 It definitely pays to consider future grooming costs when selecting a pet. Poodles are adorable with personality plus, but those grooming costs are huge. Not for the budget conscious.

I have to ask .... at the time ... were you using clay kitty litter?
I read about a woman who spoiled her kitty (and had the $$$) to do so. She was devastated when her kitty died, and could afford an autopsy, so she paid to have one done.
Well, the cause of death was an intestinal blockage. Seems like the microscopic particles of clay litter stuck to feet after litter box usage.
Her cat grooming itself licked and swallowed the clay particles, which slowly collected as a lump, and an eventual blockage, in the cat's tummy!
