A pack of 11 coyotes was no match for a Great Pyrenees dog named Casper who protected his sheep last month in Decatur, Georgia.
*
The incident happened on November 3 when some coyotes came near urban shepherd John Wierwille’s home, 11 Alive reported Thursday.
*
Wierwille, who is Casper’s owner, scared them off, but early the next morning he heard his dogs barking and saw Casper and Daisy moving the sheep into a corner for protection.
*
He killed eight coyotes and protected the sheep, but his owner was worried when he could not find him.
*
*
“If he wasn’t killed, we figured he was hurt. We knew he was hurt, because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were worried about him,” he recalled.
*
Wierwille contacted the nonprofit organization LifeLine in Atlanta, and Casper eventually underwent multiple surgeries. His tail even had to be amputated.
*
According to the LifeLine website, they are a “nonprofit with a mission of ending the shelter euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals.”
*
Some of you know that one of our livestock dogs killed eight of the eleven coyotes that attacked his flock a couple weeks ago before he chased them off and was torn up himself. None of his flock were injured, but he has critical wounds - a severed tail, deep puncture wounds, and two large patches of skin torn away. He has been in an emergency veterinary hospital since.
*
Casper was transferred from the emergency veterinary hospital to a Lifeline clinic this morning. He will be there for at least a week, possibly longer, so the veterinarian can change his bandages twice a day at a much reduced cost.
^
Casper's wounds were so severe that he was considered to be in critical condition, but after a few minutes being disoriented he warmed up to the idea of getting out of his close quarters (we did not tell him he would be going to other close quarters) enough to enjoy his car ride. He is a little tentative about everything right now, but he let loose on the ride and barked at just about everything outside the truck and even tried to wag his tail stump.
*
Then he looked over for the positive reinforcement he craves (he got it this time, even though we do not usually encourage barking in cars). He was clearly feeling a little fiesty. Hopefully everything continues to go well. It was really good to see him acting like himself.

Oh please, let's here that this precious G.P. dog makes it through this challenging time. So sad, his training put his in this situation.

These dogs have this natural instinct to protect; I don't believe they are trained. Sincerest prayers for his full recovery.

Bless his heart. I hope he recovers quickly. Nothing better than a loyal dog.

This is an extraordinary story. I can't imagine what it looked like for a dog to fend off so many coyotes! I hope that he recovers fully and is treasured by his owners.

Where was the injured dog found & who found him?

Daisy is the owners other Great Pyrenees. Stayed close to the sheep.

This is what I found out about how Casper returned home.
*
"Casper scampered off after the fight but returned injured two days later after Wierwiller put out a call on social media.
*
I don't think Casper read it on social media. Lol.
*
"He was kinda looking at me like, 'Boss, stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me,'" Wierwiller said."

The 20-month-old dog bravely went up against a pack of 11 coyotes threatening his sheep farm — killing eight— in a fight that lasted more than half an hour, said farmer John Wierwiller.
A bloodied Casper survived with skin and part of his tail torn off, Wierwiller told Atlanta television station WAGA-TV.
He scampered off but returned injured two days later after Wierwiller put out a call on social media.
TWO DAYS???!!!!
My dog is missing after an all out brawl with a pack -and the best I did was to put out a social media call? WHAT THE HECK is wrong with that guy?
I'd not have slept until I FOUND him and I promise you - it wouldn't have taken 2 days - nope, no way.
That dog wouldn't be out there torn the heck up and in horrendous pain whilst I "social media" ....give that animal to someone who cares about animals.
And don't try to change my mind, it's how I feel and I do not give a rat's if you don't agree. Farmer or not - that is INHUMANE.

Casper, a 21-month-old Great Pyrenees, is a livestock guardian dog. Casper was in good spirits as he greeted his owner, John Wierwille, the veterinary staff and reporters at LifeLine Animal Clinic on Dec. 1. He is still recovering from his injuries, and the veterinary staff said he will make a full recovery.
