I agree with everyone that says not to let the cat outside.  That is a terrible thing to do to a cat.  They can be killed or mamed.  There are a lot of people and kids out there that love to torture animals.  I feel the litter in the boxes you changed were probably not dust free.  You probably would be able to use a dust free litter and clean it often and not have any trouble.  Once you start cleaning you will get used to it.  But, please don't get a cat and then be remorsefull and give the cat up just because of the litter.  Cats are beautiful and loving animals and be very comforting when you need it.  I have 5 cats and they all have different personalities and loving ways.  Two of them sleep with me every night.  If you get a dog you will still have to walk it and clean up afterwards.  God bless and help in your decision.

@eddyandme Your post is making me laugh.  You are really possessed by your cat.  It must be a riot living with the cat.

You're right, @luvmybeetle , except he's about a 70lb Amstaff/Cocker; and, he is the boss!  And, my Jade, who 'brought' Eddy to me used to do the same.  I think they must communicate!  Or they just know somehow I'm easy!Woman LOL.

PS Eddy's snoring like a trooper and I'm flipping channels!!!! )A kitty would rule, too I'm sure.)

So sorry, I just assumed it was a cat.  But, good luck with that.

@charlestownliz   I don't think you should get a cat with the intention of letting him/her live outside.  It's just too dangerous.  Outdoor cats disappear all the time.  Coyotes kill them, and they get hit by cars among other things.  It's just not the right thing to do.  They deserve to be indoors only and loved by you.

If you had an indoor/outdoor cat they would still need a litter box for when they're in the house.  It just wouldn't work.

Why don't you just get a small dog?

@NickNack. @charlestownliz.  In addition to the points stated above, loose cats are terrible pests and not appreciated by non-cat lovers.  They yowl at night,  climb all over cars, dig and poop in flower beds and vegetable gardens, loll and get fur on outdoor furniture.  I had one knock over and break an expensive fountain trying to get a drink.  My community has strick leash laws that pertain to both dogs and cats.  We also have a booming coyote population so outside cats have very short lives.

Please don't get a cat unless you're prepared to keep it inside 24/7.

I've been a cat Mom for years and prefer Tidy Cats Clumping Litter.  Some other litters I've used almost smell worse than the litter box - too perfumy.  I scoop my cat's litter box a few times a day and stir it around.  All my cats have been strictly indoors which keeps them safe.  Hope things work out so you can adopt a kitty.  So many shelters have beautiful animals waiting for a good home.  Cat Happy

@charlestownliz  First of all, did you not have to pick up after your dog when he relieved himself outside??

What made you ill about the litter box? Was it the odor, the sight? What exactly is it?

Other than a dog, there is no animal that is going to relieve themselves outside on a routine basis. Our cat, who is allowed to go outside, comes in the house to use her litter box. How odd is that?! LOL

I believe there are litter boxes that supposedly are self-cleaning; you would have to research that. Please, check with your veterinarian for any further advice on that and suggestions they may offer you.

Sorry, but I don't believe that you are a candidate for indoor pets. There is no getting around "cleaning up" after any animal that will live indoors.

And to leave a cat outside all day is cruel. When my cat is outside, I'm constantly watching for her and bringing her back inside. She comes in and out 100 x a day it seems. Plus, cats are grazers so her "crunchies" are available inside all day for her to nibble on as she pleases, not to mention fresh water!

If I decided to get a cat, there is no way I would let it be an outside cat.  I would be way too concerned about where it was and its safety.  I would also be concerned about what it could be picking up, stepping into, brushing against, etc.  while out there.

My biggest concern by far would be safety.  I personally couldn't do it.

I never have, but some people have successfully taught cats to use the toilet. To learn more about this technique  Google: teaching cat to use toilet
