After finding no cancer w/ full body scan, blood work, etc., the vet decided to remove Sadie's toe before other toes became compromised.

She figured out how to lick her bandage w/ usual plastic collar. Petco had this neat "tire" collar that is working so far.

She's on pain pills and antibiotics. It's not a weight bearing toe. Full recovery expected.

Yay! Brave old Sadie!!!

I have a 16 year old 75 pound dog who does not like his feet touched on a good day.  I had him at the Vet yesterday because I thought he had ripped a toenail out of a back paw.  After muzzling him and the Vet examining it turns out to be a tumor between his toes. We had a discussion about treatment and the Vet recommended leaving it alone because of his age and she said if it was melanoma the damage had already been done.  She also said it is a very painful surgery for the dog so I wish Sadie a speedy recovery.

@DiAnne. Sorry about your dog's paw. Think we were lucky to catch Sadie's early when we noticed her foot was swollen & she was reluctant to put weight on it.

I think I agree w/ your vet. Anesthesia on a dog that age can be "iffy". We worried about that w/ Sadie, but she was only "under" for a very short time.

Hope all works out well for you and your buddy.
