As many of you know, I have a new puppy. I have been looking at pet insurance for her. Do any of you have pet insurance, what company do you use? and how is it working for you? I would appreciate help in making this decision.

instead of buying insurance, I set aside money every month in a savings acct 'just in case'. recently someone posted somewhere that her pet had died, but because she had used a claim, she would have to continue to pay until the end of that year. paying after a pet died? no, thank you.
on the other hand, I know some have had pet insurance and happy with it.
I would carefully check all the contract details. setting aside money to cover instead of insurance works best for me. let's hope we never need to use either way!

That is a very good idea. Thank you. My bird is on the wellness plan at the vet and I pay monthly for her care. When it comes time for her yearly wellness exam, it is paid for. If my bird died, they would not charge me any longer. It sure is nice to have the money there to pay for the exam though.

@conlt The rescue group I got my dog from gives its owners 1 yr of FREE pet insurance. I forgot the name of it. Because my vet has a discount sliding scale for seniors (humans) as well as for senior pets, I did not renew. In my neck of the woods, all vets & vet hospitals have discounted senior (humans) pricing.
Suggest you check w/your vet about senior pricing.

I must be one of a few who did not know. Breed? How old? Pics?
Congrats!

Thank you, I had not thought about senior pricing. My 2 other Shelties are seniors and I am a senior and did not know about possible senior discounts.

First, have you had other animals and used this vet ... or are you new to this vet, too?
At the time, I looked at various pet insurance companies and then it occurred to me to ask the vet's office who THEY thought had good plans.
Since they deal all the time with bills and insurance payments, I was sure they'd also remember unhappy customers when they had to come up with extra $$$ when the insurance didn't pay.
As it turned out, their recommendations were spot-on.

My thoughts are these days Yes, get it and get it sooner rather than later. If your Vet finds something amiss BEFORE you get insurance it could be considered a pre existing condition and excluded from coverage. Vet care is expensive. There are new and expensive treatments and diagnostics that may be covered with insurance but highly prohibitive if you Don't have coverage.

We just got a new puppy and I signed up for the Puppy Wellness plan they offer. Its $73 a month for 12 months. Its gone up $20 since my last pup. The first time I got it in 2014 it included spaying and was $63.a month. That is not included in the current plan I usually only have the wellness plan for the first year. It runs about $400. a year after that for their care. Having a pet is expensive.

I have had PetPlan insurance. It goes up as the dogs get older even if they are healthy.
It does not cover preexisting conditions, or routine preventative services.
I had one dog years ago who needed a complicated surgery from a vet neurologist. I got the $8000 bill paid for at at 90% for the surgeon plus it paid for lab tests and five days in intensive care.
I had no problems getting reimbursed and was more than thankful to have had it.
If you have a breed that is known to have issues with certain conditions, it is worth having.

I have Trupanion insurance on my dog. That is also the insurer my vet uses for his animals.
I also participate in my vet's Wellness Plan. I don't recall the exact cost but it is under $50 a month.
My dog just had her annual checkup, blood work, etc. and I walked out without a charge.
Later this month she will have a dental and that too will be covered. There may be a small charge for meds if needed.
A couple months ago my cat had her senior annual and the cost was close to $300.
