This morning I noticed a bird nest on the ground. It was under the bird house. I am guessing that "someone" during the night had removed the nest from the birdhouse.
There were no remnants of any eggs. I know that there are several birds checking out the bird house at times. I can't help but wonder if a bird came and cleaned "house" before moving in.
Should I get a ladder and put the old bird nest back into the bird house? Or should I let the birds work it out? Or am I jumping to the wrong conclusion? There was no storm. The weather has been sunny and warm the past week. So the nest did not fly out of the bird house.

I would leave it alone.

I agree - leave it alone. Just don't run over it with the lawnmower.

Was the nest originally in the nestbox?

I am pretty sure it was. Since it was underneath the bird house.

@drizzellla How would a bird have gotten it out of the house in one piece? Is the birdhouse on a tree? Maybe the nest fell out of the tree.

The nest was alot of grass and lightweight fluff. It had to be inside the bird house. The fluff would not have remained intact exposed to weather if not protected.
PS - My husband said it could have been a squirrel that removed the nest.

Last time we saw a snake in the neighborhood was 30+ years ago. It was a garter snake. With the cats, raccoons and foxes around, I doubt there are any left.
But who knows, you may be right. Just because I don't see any doesn't mean they aren't around.

@drizzellla "I am guessing that "someone" during the night had removed the nest from the birdhouse."
Why would "someone" be checking out a birdhouse on your property at night? I gather you do not have security cams.
