This task, along with teeth brushing, are 2 of the worse chores of dog ownership. De-pooping the yard is up there too. Some dogs are more sensitive than others pertaining to the handling of their paws. I find that if I use a high quality clipper and speak high pitched, excited baby talk to them during the session with lots of praise for holding still I feel better (not sure about the dog). If there is a nick use stypic (?sp) powder sold at pet stores to control bleeding.
If you are still not comfortable just continue to reserve and keep clipping at the vets office.
