When I had my kitties they got that clumpy fur too as they got old. At their 6 month check ups  I asked my Vet to just shave the most troublesome areas.  It was much easier to prevent them from forming  as the fur grew back in than trying to comb them out.

Hi @NickNack

I hope you & your Family are having a Blessed Thanksgiving today.

I did receive this pet tool last week & have used it a few times on Ginger.  Boy, does it remove quite a bit of fur!  However, Ginger has only been a "little" receptive to this.  I'm pretty sure she won't be receptive to me using it on her matted areas.  I tried & she meows or tries to escape.  And, Fluffy (who has never allowed me to groom her without putting up a fight, took off fast.  I still need to keep trying on Ginger as I basically only got her back & sides - no underbelly, chest, etc. areas.

Wish me luck .... tomorrow's another day, maybe she'll be in a better mood.   Woman Wink

@sceniccoast   I think the more you use it the more you'll like it.  Ginger will get used to it.  Fluffy might not.  When I'm getting a mat, I hold the mat with one hand so that I won't pull it too hard.  If the mats are pretty bad you may have to cut some of them out and then start from scratch with the rake.  Good luck!  Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

@NickNack

I did try to hold a matted area in a couple areas - no luck, she didn't like it.  I also did cut part of a matted area a few weeks ago & again, she didn't like it.  I tried being gentle both times.

It must be very uncomfortable for Ginger but I'm determined to try again .. I'm just going to try & wait for the right moment.

Thanks for mentioning this tool.  I also mentioned it to my friend who also has a longer haired kitty.
