NEED HELP WITH DOGS SCRATCHING MY FRONT DOOR!

Need suggestions please!

When I unlock my front door, my two dogs run to the door and start scratching at it.

I found plexishields for the doors.  Unfortunately, my dogs are scratching at the MOLDING around the door - not the door itself.

I'm looking for something to put on the molding, so they can't scratch it.

ANY SUGGESTIONS???   Again, not for the door.  The molding around door.

Sounds like some 'training' is the answer.  You can cover everything with bubble wrap - or - set some standards for the animals.

As I mentioned, they scratch at the door before I open it.

Therefor, I am not catching them in the act.  You can't scold them for something they dont know they did.

@qvc chick - Maybe try some wide (like packing tape) double sided sticky tape? Their paws won't like that stickiness, and it's in place for when you're not around to tell them "No".  May be worth a try.

@qvc chick   Whatever you do do not hit them with a newspaper or anything else!!  There are ways to train them positively.  Get something like an air horn and use that noise to distract them before or right after putting the key in and if they do not scratch have treats with you to give them.  Do this everytime you come home and even several times a day leave then come back repeating this.  Should work.

Also, you could try putting 2 baby gates together in a V shape around the door when leaving so they can't get close to it.  T

I had a Schnauzer that would p** on the end of the sofa (near the door) when he got excited that I was home!

Scratching, not so bad! LoL

@qvc chick some kind of alarm that goes off when disturbed.... or touched that you set when you leave around the door...   You could hang them on the door knob or whatever. when they come too close it goes off... then resets itself...

I might try this one on Amazon....

@fthunt

Swat them? Maybe something more gentle would be effective.

....surely there's got to be a better way than to swat any animal.

I'd faster swat my BRAT kid than my pet!

and that's a tru-stori ...

We hung a jingly bell from the doorknob and trained our dog to nudge it to ask to go out.  The trick is to be responsive (positive reinforcement) when you hear the bell.

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.

I love the idea of the bellSmiley Happy

I really believe that hitting or swatting

just teaches animals and children to be aggressive.

They learn that when they are upset or angry to lash out and hurt back.

Animals esp dogs love to please and rewarding them with attention, treats and time really does work.

At the same time they can learn to respect you and want to do what you ask.
