She is a small shih tzu mix, 4 years old and we cannot find out why she is in pain.

After several trips to the vet, a very good vet, several X-rays and an ultrasound, we still don't know why she is in pain.

After she first gets up, she limps and whimpers and avoids stepping down on her right rear leg. When picking her up, I have to be careful about her lower back because she cries then too. After a couple minutes she seems ok, but today with the rain, she seems a little worse.

Vet suggests it might be a pinched nerve or soft tissue damage or arthritis.

Her little whimpers tear through my heart. Vet prescribed a pain pill, but I really want to fix the source.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

This is making DH and myself so unhappy.

@Mz iMac  I trust my vet, the other vet in the office and the third vet that took the ultrasound.

So sorry your poor baby is hurting. I too would go for a second opinion. Something has to be wrong is he is still in pain after seeing a vet. Maybe something in his paw? Maybe there is something that your vet is missing? To put your mind at ease consult with a second vet. Best of luck to you and your fur baby. Blessings.

Little dogs are common for hip dysplacia (pls excuse spelling) Their hips go out of place. Many times as the case with all of  mine ,I can massage it back in place.

I give him glucosimine daily and it helps a lot

If he has a "spell" i massage it,give him 1/2 baby asprin and doggie pain meds and most of the time he is better the next day .......sometimes 2.

I don't know why your vet doesn't know whats wrong.I hope it is something that can be fixed quickly .

Dogs don't fake pain.  Maybe another pair of eyes will help.  Perhaps a Veterinary Neurologist.

If the X-rays and ultrasound do not show anything serious, that is a good thing.

You do not say how long she has been having pain.  Is she overweight at all?

Does she exercise a lot?

Why don't you try some of the medicine, massages, and heat, and see if there is any improvement.

She could have pulled a muscle or hurt a tendon walking or jumping around as well.

Arthritis is not curable but can be managed with diverse treatments.

Just give her the meds. I’m sure they wouldn’t have prescribed them if she didn’t need them. She’s probably having spasms from being in pain and at least that will calm her and perhaps bring you all some relief.

@Chicagosuburbangirl  I am so sorry that your dog is in pain, but you must either get a second opinion or start giving your dog the pain meds that have been prescribed.  Dogs cannot talk, so you have to do whatever is necessary to make your dog feel better.

There are specialists who do acupuncture and massage.  Those might be other options.  It also might be just a sprain that needs to heal.  Check the paws for anything that might have been missed by the vet.  

No matter what it is, you are the one that your dog depends on.  I hope that everything works out for the best.

You can give your dog the pain meds and still try to find out what's wrong.  It sounds like she really needs them.  I would want to find out, too, but would give the pain meds.
