My son's black Lab has been here all week and not having dogs of my own I've been spoiling him and loving on him a lot, which is a good thing.  This is the problem:  he's always wanting attention and whenever I sit down he'll stand up and put his paws on me and scratch (his claws are sharp!). When I tell him to stop and get down--no yelling, just in firm voice--he barks and growls at me. He doesn't do this to my son so my son thinks I'm spoiling him and letting him get away with bad behavior. It's interesting how they are a lot like kids and will push the boundaries to see what they can get away with.

The dog is challenging you for the Alpha position in his (which includes you) pack.

Do NOT underestimate the dog, as much as you may spoil him, he's still an animal, therefore unpredictable.

Your safety is the utmost importance, STOP spoiling him, that's submissive behavior on your part.

If you want to treat him occasionally, make him earn it. Make him earn the treat from you. That's submissive behavior on his part.

Progress!

Re: My grandfurbaby is visiting

Yes, they can be just like toddlers. And they love attention!

I do spoil mine but he's not spoiled rotten meaning I don't allow nastiness/meanness. But everything else is ok...I figure their lives are so short that they should have the best lives possible and yes, be spoiled.

When needed I believe in positive reinforcement over punishment, I think it's kinder and much more affective.

For behavior I don't like I'll totally ignore him and even turn my back and not even look at him....he hates that.

Have fun with your granddog!

True... (I posted my above post before reading your post, I don't want to look like I'm disagreeing with you, I'm not really other than I do spoil...maybe not the greatest advice but oh well. haha)

I said to spoil, I do, but I don't allow meanness/nastiness or behavior that's destructive.
