I went and did some reading on this , kooper does this with his back legs ,at times but not sure this is what he has, there really isn't much that can be done from what i read.

@goldensrbest - it's true - it's like Lou Gehrig's disease in people - no cure yet.  Really sad, but my dog is still very happy and alert at this point.  I'm going to read up on more holistic things to keep her comfortable.  It has not affected her front legs yet and as long as she is moving, her back legs work okay.  Losing her balance a lot, falling, she can get up if she falls down which is good.  Her mind is sharp though - she remembers when she is supposed to go for a walk and when food and treat time is.

Re: My friend figured out what is wrong with Sedona

First, I am very sorry about your dog. 16+ years is a long and wonderful time with your beloved companion.

Second, do not diagnose your best friend via the Internet. Seek another opinion from a professional. This is the best course of action. You have a potential diagnosis, but the Internet is not a doctor.

Third, your best friend is 16-years old. She lived a long, amazing life. I just had to say goodbye to my dog, Mya, after 15-years. We decided to euthanize her because she started having seizures and couldn't walk anymore (she started declining after my father's passing, so we think she was REALLY attached to him and didn't like not having him around). We looked into her eyes and just knew we had to do what was best for her. Dogs will let you know. Keeping her alive in her condition was cruel: We would have only done it for us, not for her. Forcing her to keep going was selfish and not the way to honor the life of our sweet girl who did nothing but love us every day of her life. You need to be honest with yourself: Are you keeping Sedona alive because *she* wants to live or because you can't bear to see her go, therefore making selfish decisions?

We let Mya go because she deserved peace and a send-off surrounded by loved ones. We knew she was having a hard time, and we knew that forcing her to continue while her system was shutting down-- her legs not working, seizures, she started losing control of her bathroom abiilities, her breathing wasn't so good anymore, she couldn't get up the stairs on her own, she slept more, wasn't eating as much-- was hurting her more than us even though our pain was extreme.

Sometimes, you have to put personal feelings aside and say, "what is best for you, my best friend? You, who has given your life to me as a faithful companion, need to tell me what you need and I will do what's best for you."

Goodbye isn't easy, but think about how your poor girl feels. A dog's mind is a wonderful thing, and they think and feel way more than you know. Look at her eyes; you can tell. She's already lost all her dignity because she is forced to continue despite all the signs that say "Momma, please let me go frolic at the Rainbow Bridge. I'll be there for you as a whole dog. I'll be young and free again. Please, momma, I want to run and play in the ways you remember. Why don't you want that for me?"

Please, for the sake of your best friend, do what's right for her, not what's right for you. I'm not being mean, but talking to you as a fellow dog mom. It hurts to let our children go, but it's easy knowing that they'll be whole again and they'll be forever in your heart.

It's good to have a direction to focus on for Sedona now.  It sounds like what you have been doing is what you Should be doing.  Maybe run it by your Vet to see if they have any other tips.  I second the acupuncture. If it's a nerve issue it may be very helpful.  Since Sedona dosen't like the fish oil can you give her the fish oil Capsules that you can hide in her food?  Pats to Sedona and Story and a good evening to you!

@hoosieroriginal - I'm so sorry you have to watch Sedona going through this. All of us pet lovers go through something like this eventually. DH is a veterinarian. I talked to him about this just now. He strongly suggests you get a second opinion from another veterinarian. He said sometimes holistic practices seem to help, but don't really, and you don't want her to suffer unnecessarily. He said another veterinarian might suggest a specialist who will be able to help more. If the second veterinarian also thinks it's arthritis, then you will know. Good luck!

Re: My friend figured out what is wrong with Sedona

@hoosieroriginal, those of us who have read your various posts over the years, know what a fine pet owner you are and realize that you would never just take internet information as gospel.  I'm guessing that if you believe your dog has Lou Gehrig's disease than she does, in fact, have it.  I'm sure you'll be seeing a vet about this soon and get all the information you need to handle Sedona in the proper manner.

When my vet confirmed that my dog had Cushing's disease several years ago, it was because I had done my research on the internet and it was because I insisted he test my dog for that disease.  So, in many cases, internet information can be very helpful.

At any rate, I wish you and Sedona the best of luck.
