Sorry to say, but arthritis just may be too hurtful in his legs. It's a hard decision, but as with people when they get older, you could say, he's living, but he has no life. I would not let one of my little ones go on that way. I consider it the kindest thing we can do for our babies who can't talk. It is our ultimate sacrafice, in love for them.

@JJDaughterz64  I agree with all the above posters about taking your pup to the vet.  It could be something simple or perhaps not, BUT you need to know for HIS sake and YOUR peace of mind.  This is just one more aspect of pet ownership.....not always the best part, but it is part of our committment.

There was a post above about quality of life versus comfortable.  This is a matter of opinion, as this poster said.  I don't see anything wrong with "comfortable"  in the last stage of life.  That, to me, means no suffering.  If your pet wants to be around you, his family and is not not suffering, there is still a quality about that.  This is a personal opinion.  Sometimes things that go on at the end of a pet's life are not convenient......I don't mean this as snarky.  If one is able to be there with the pet (not working, etc) and can do the extra care that is often required, this is a gift for both the pet and guardian.

Update..not sure where to post. Generally just read board. I talked with the veterinarian this morning. They agree. They believe it is his time to go because of his age and medical history. Thank you all for your responses to my question. Just was looking for another answer than what we had already thought. This is hard. Thanks again.

I'm so sorry @JJDaughterz64.  You're doing the best thing for him, but I'm sorry you had to make this decision.

I am so sorry. I know it is a very difficult decision. Just had to go through it in June. Please know there are many of us here who have gone through it and I think I can say we are here for comfort and support if you need us.  Hugs!

@JJDaughterz64   I am sorry you have to go through this, but when we take a pet into our home and heart, we know that this is all part of it.  Please take comfort that you have done everything to make this sweet dog's life the best it could be.  You rescued him!  I am sure he was thankful everyday of his life with you and your family.  As hard as it is, this is the last act of kindness and love that you can do for him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
