My Dusty has crossed the rainbow bridge :(

I talked about Dusty and posted his picture on the thread about the Subaru bucket list commercial.

I only had him for less that 2 years, but he was a senior with health problems when I adopted him after this family surrendered him to the local shelter.  We got his brain tumor caused epilepsy under control and he did very well and had a good life here with us for 1 1/2 years.  The past 2 weeks though he started deteriorating at an alarming rate and yesterday he could no longer walk even with help.  I held him and loved him until the very end.  Even my Vet and her vet tech were sniffling as we all told him how much he was loved and said good-bye.

My Dad always said when he died he would join his dogs over the bridge, and I believe he did.  I made sure to tell Dusty to checks by Dad's pockets cause there's always a treat or two in there.  With all my rescues who have crossed over the years, I'm thinking my Dad has had to graduate to cargo pants to hold the treats and poop bags!

I've lost 2 now in under a month making this especially hard and my heart is so broken I'm afraid I can't continue to do these senior rescues.  I hope in time I'll be ready to start again because there is such a need for this older dogs.

My heart breaks for you and I am so sorry for your loss.  Giving him a lot of love was one of the best gifts he could've ever received.  Hugs to you.

@Buck-i-Nana, I'm sniffing with you! You are such a hero, loving your rescues so mightily, giving them life and hope and love. You don't get over the loss of any pet, you just get through it. Bless you for your open arms and heart! Heart

Oh my gosh, @Buck-i-Nana, I am soooo very sorry for your loss.  I've seen many of your posts lately where you talk about your dogs and I just didn't realize Dusty's time was so close to the end.  My heart is sad for you.

You will be in my thoughts.  My condolences to you and yours.

@Buck-i-Nana

My deepest sympathies on your losses, I know how much it hurts.

I found this poem after one of my losses and found it comforting, maybe you & DH will too.

Last Night

I stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peek.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you wiped away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour your coffee.
You were thinking of the many times your hand reached down to me.

I was with you at the shop today; your arms were getting sore,
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you toward the house, you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you; I smiled and said, "It's me."

You looked so very, very tired and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you everyday,
to tell you with such certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew....
in the stillness of the evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over, I smile and watch you yawning
and say, "Goodnight, God Bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to meet you and we'll stand side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there's so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out....then come home to be with me.
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

@Buck-i-Nana

God bless you for doing these senior rescues and giving pups like Dusty a wonderful twilight of their lives -- knowing that they are completely cared for and cherished.  Your heart is broken because you love deeply, and we need more compassionate people like you looking after our elderly furry ones.

Dusty was fortunate to spend his final days in such a loving home. Your love & care probably extended his life. As much as we prepare for our pets' departures, it is still very difficult. Sending hugs your way.
