I figured out a long time ago that if my bedroom was wall-to-wall mattress I'd be plastered against the wall with no room to move.

Same. I literally have about 12 inches on a queen sized mattress and my dogs are small! It's even worse when it is cold and they plaster themselves against me and if I move, they move.

My pets do not know my bedroom exists. All they know is that I disappear behind a door from time to time. I don't sleep in their bed(s) therefore, they don't sleep in mine.

I totally agree.. Have had many dogs, their beds were in the bedroom, but never ever up in my bed. My Kids sleep with their dogs, but in their homes.

I would LOVE to have our Golden Retriever sleep in our bed, but she's 9 and we don't want her jumping up that high (or down) and she's a bit too heavy for us to pick her up. LLLLOOOOVVVVEEEE that dog!
