Chocolate isn't an automatic death sentence for a dog.  They can eat it without getting ill too.  You just don't want to make it a habit of it or feed it in large quantities.  A very small amt every once in a while isn't going to hurt them.  There is really no reason to feed it to them anyway but they aren't going to get sick or die if if you feed a 65lb dog an Ahoy choc chip cookie. Dark choc is worse than milk choc.  It's the amt of chocolate/dog weight ratio.  Sugar is bad for them as well.

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a known toxicant for dogs and should be avoided completely.

@beach-mom

It should be avoided but a tiny amt depending on the dog's weight isn't a death sentence.  I would hate for the owner of a Bull Mastiff to think his dog is going to die because his 110lb dog ate a Hershey Kiss.

@monicakm  The thing is I don't think I've EVER seen a dog Stop at just One of ANYTHING when they get into it.

The trouble is usually They got into the Pound of chocolate morsels or Ate the whole batch of double chocolate brownies that were just made. OR the box of chocolates Left on the coffee table.  Wrappers are not a deterrent.

And Yes EVEN a FEW  squares of Dark chocolate CAN have devastating effects on a dog.

Do NOT let a dog get into CHOCOLATE.
