I agree with the thought that your kitty has hyperthyroid.  It's very common in older cats and very easily treatable.  My cat, mr. booty had the same symptoms that you mentioned including the howling and that's what it turned out to be.  Not sure about the "goobers" that you mentioned - but I'm guessing that those are completely unrelated. 

 

How did the vet appointment go?  Has the bloodwork come back yet?  Sending good thoughts.  Hopefully kitty will be feeling better soon.  Keep us posted Smiley Happy

I have been a Cat Mom for decades.  I know how hard it is when they get older and start having problems.  My Muffy lived to be 19.  The last year of her life I took her to the vet every few weeks to get fluids under the skin to keep her kidneys functioning.  I was devastated when I finally had to make the decision to let her go but I think she was ready.  Sending hugs to you.
