I can't believe this happened, it still seems unreal. About a week ago, my 12.5 year old Scottie started getting really picky about his food, so I got him in to see my vet right away. His bloodwork showed something going on with his liver, but he was also due for a dental, so the vet said he'd do an ultrasound when Johnny was already sedated. That was suppossed to happen this coming Tuesday, but on Friday he stopped eating at all, so I got him back to the clinic. A different vet gave me an appetite stimulant, and looked at him quickly with an ultrasound. She said the gallbladder looked okay, but his liver was "different colors of gray", meaning the texture of the tissue was of varying densities. The new medicine helped a little overnight, and Johnny ate some rotisserie chicken and cooked hamburger, and a whole bunch of dog cookies for me last night, but this morning the foods he gobbled last night he turned his nose up at, so I knew something was going from bad to worse, and I was right. We went to the emergency vet, where they did more bloodwork and another, more thorough, ultrasound, and found discrete masses in his liver, so we knew we were fighting end-stage cancer. The vet felt that even if we could keep him alive for a while if he were hospitalized that he'd quickly decline if we took him home, and that nothing they could do would give him any more quality time, so we sent him over the Rainbow Bridge. With his loss, in just the last 12 months, all three of my last dogs has died. I find myself shocked and in disbelief, it's like my world just fell out from underneath me. I think I'm actually in shock.

@CamilleP I'm so sorry! Losiing our pets suddenly like this is always such a shock.
I had a cat, Charlie, who died in 2010 of liver disease...he had no symptoms, just quit eating. We took him to the vet who did an xray, recommended a couple of options for treatment, and suggested that he keep Charlie overnight while we made a decision. Well, Charlie took a bad turn and died just a few hours later, before we could get there. We had no idea he was so sick!
I say all this to tell you--I know a bit about how you are feeling right now! You took good care of your Scottie, and he had a nice long life with you. He went to the Rainbow Bridge knowing he was very much loved. He will be happy there til you see him again!

@CamilleP I am sorry for your loss of Johnny. You no doubt are suffering compounded grief from his death being added to the loss of your other fur babies in such a short period of time. No wonder you feel in shock. Take care. Our thoughts are with you.

Our pets are certainly a big part of our lives and hold such special places in our hearts. You have my sympathy, @CamilleP. And multiple times in a year, I'm so sorry. No one knows the grief unless they have been through it.
It just happened with us too. We've had to help many cats over the years, but with our dog it was different. It was painful and heartbreaking but our love for him made it clear that we had to help him. We showered him with special food, lots of treats, extra attention, a visit with some special people in his life. As loving dog parents we knew we had to do what was best for him, not what was convenient or easy for us. Saturday morning we spent a little time in the backyard brushing him and taking some pictures, and then his last car ride. Our hearts are broken and the house doesn't feel right.
As with us, I'm sure the same is true with you and all of your pups. Between "hello" and "goodbye" there was a lot of love. So much love. Allow yourself to process the hurt, but then cherish the memories. 🐾🐾🐾

@CamilleP, I am so very worry for your sudden loss of Johnny,
as well as your other beloved dogs. I can understand why you would be in complete shock. It happens so often that a pet will seem fine, and then suddenly go downhill. And desite all the best treatment, it is their time to leave. I am sure Johnny had a wonderful life with you, and loves you still.
