Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

When my kids were little we each picked a name we liked and wrote them on pieces of paper. We put the papers on the floor and the first one the puppy stepped on was her new name! She picked Emma!

Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

I go by whatever hits me after watching their behavior and personality for a few weeks.  I don't use human names, so they are eliminated.

I try to think of something unique that fits perfectly.  Depends on the dog...the breed, whether the dog is large or small.  If the dog is large and regal, he/she gets a regal name.  If small and cute, that's another consideration.

Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

Our first dog was named Schnauzer. How that came to be his name was that I thought he was a schnauzer. He was a stray that came to our door and wouldn't leave after I gave him some of my homemade vegetable soup. I called the animal shelter and reported a found schnauzer. I wasn't familiar with dog breeds at that time. He was a humble and lovable dog also a mixed terrier who instilled in us a lasting love for dogs.

Mine were all named for food which matched their fur color (Marmalade, Oreo, Snickers, Taffy, Licorice....).

My dogs were always older adopted dogs - they came with names and we kept them.

Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

I adopted my two cats from the Fredericksburg SPCA.   My 13 year old is Mary and my 7 year old is Elaine.   These were the names the SPCA gave the cats.   Mary got her name because at times she stands on her hind legs and then puts her front paws together and moves her front legs up and down.   Looks like she is praying.   We think she does this for attention from us, the other cat, or if a leaf is blowing in the wind on the deck.   Now she likes to lay on the floor on her side and move her front legs up and down.   This is for attention and very funny to see.   She is a character!

We name after we I get to know them a bit.

Yes, we have always re-named rescues with their Real name.

Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

I named our first Ragdoll Cat Pretty Boy Floyd. For one he was gorgeous and I loved the name Floyd. Then we adopted a Male and named it Stormy because his eyes looked stormy. Then the kittens came and we named one Hurricane Camille but she would run through the house like a Hurricane. We called her Camille of course. Another one we named Cool Hand Luke because he had one white paw and we called him Luke.

Years have passed and we now have a Ragmuffin Cat named Lucy and yes you guessed it I am an I love Lucy Fan. We then adopted a Ragdoll from Fancy Feline Rescue and we  named her Deserie but call her Desi and we feed a feral cat now and have been for 5 years and we call him Ricky.

Re: How did you choose your pet's names?

[ Edited ]

The names come to me.  Mostly within a couple days.  For Jasper, however, it took about five weeks!  YIKES!  I felt like an idiot... people would ask me his name, and I didn't have one for him.  But, nothing worked.  Then, one evening he did something that my late, great, Jake did, and his name hit me.  Jasper, aka Jazz(y).  He was a bit sick, and a lethargic puppy, so it seemed strange to be naming him Jazz, but I knew that it was his name, and as his tummy problems settled down, he did indeed become Jazzy!

As for Jake, I rescued him when he was just shy of 11 month old.  His name had been Eli, which just didn't work for him!  He let me know his name within a day or two.  I called him Jake(y), Jakes, Jay, and JJ.

Tyler was on my long list of names for boy #2, but didn't make it onto my short list.  I didn't have the list with me when I picked him up 1,200 miles from home.  After 24 hours, I decided to call him Charlie until I figured out his name.  The next morning, when I called to him, Tyler came out of my mouth.  I tried a few other names over the next 2-3 days, but Tyler kept coming out of my mouth!  That was over 14.5 years ago.  My beautiful baby is an old man now, but still with me, and still totally delicious!
