Yeah, that would be me. People have choices they can make for themselves and have free will and also social programs to help them. Domestic (as opposed to wild) dogs are dependent on people to care for them. Big difference. My sympathy lies with the dogs who are at the mercy of people, for certain.
@Pearlee So you have experience getting this "HELP" and have walked in the shoes of a person who has nothing? Please tell us more about your experience and how these SOCIAL PROGRAMS saved you from being homeless and poor.
How can you say your sympathy lies with dogs OVER HUMAN BEINGS AND THEIR SUFFERING? My gosh, some people just are so insensitive and self consumed. You need a lesson in kindness or a huge wakeup call. Perhaps yours will be being homeless some day.....

At our food bank we hand out pet food for those who need it. It is all donated - and those who recieve it are grateful.

Some people may choose to live on the streets WITH their pet rather than stay in a shelter that requires them to part with their pet. Think of disasters like Hurricane Katrina where people refused to leave their dwellings because they knew they would be separated from their pets.
It's all about perspective.

@SeaMaiden First of all, kindly stop shouting at me. Second of all, I posted my opinion. Do you have experience at every single thing you post an opinion on? Where do you get off reading something into my post that isn't there and then shouting at me about it? I absolutely hate when people extrapolate things from posts that aren't there and then go off on a poster for it. That would be you this time.

@lolakimono I've noticed emergency management officials have become a lot more sensitive about the need for pet care during evacuations. People often refuse to leave their pets behind.
The evacuations we've had in recent years have all included some provision for pet care, even to include livestock. These have been forest fire evacuations. I assume their emergency planning now automatically takes into account the need to protect animals too.

When I relocated for my job about a decade ago, I had a hard time finding a rental (one year, while I checked out the area) that would accept TWO cats. Some would allow one pet, for extra money, of course, but very few would allow two. I can only imagine if something happened to me and I had to find emergency housing for myself + two (sister) cats.

@SeaMaiden You are being disingenuous. "So you..." is an assumption and then saying "Please tell us more about your experience and how these SOCIAL PROGRAMS [shouting at me] saved you from being homeless and poor."
Come on.....stop playing innocent. And leave me alone. I'm entitled to my opinion so please move along to your own and stop berating me or I will ask the Mods to close this thread..

@SeaMaiden - "These people" I am talking about can go out and get a job just like the rest of us - if they can stand on a corner all day holding up a sign, they can work a job. There are people out there that truly our help, I guarantee you, but they wouldn't drag an animal around with them to get sympathy. But 3/4 of "these people" are just as healthy as you and me and choose not to work. If you offer them a job, they come up with an excuse. Then they drag a poor dog or cat into the mix to get our sympathy. And yes, they use the money for their drugs or booze. Open your eyes.
Where do you get your statistical evidence that "3/4" of "these people" are healthy and just choose not to work?

for many people shelters are not the safe havens we all think they are.So many rather sleep on the street, where they are minimally safe rather then get raped ,robbed of whatever precious item (to them) they may have or worse.........
That is why they do not go for help and prefer to live on the "safer " street!
I once volunteered in these "safe" shelters in Newark ,N.J. ! I needed a huge,"black male" (sorry for the reference to "black" but it is true <3 ) ,bodyguard to walk me out to my car daily!
that is why they prefer the safety of the street! Wouldn't you?
