I went out to my garage to put something up. I closed the door behind me when I went out there. About 20 minujtes later I heard scratching at the door. I opened it, and it was Henry, my cat. He had gotten in the garage when I went in there.
He's only done that once before that I recall, and that was recently. That time I saw him go in. This time it scared me, because I didn't realize he was in there. If I had opened the garage door or had been leaving in the car it could have been really dangerous for him.
I'm going to have to be really careful from now on.

@NickNack Poor Henry, I am so glad that he did not get hurt in the incident. One of my friends recently drove to town and looked in her rear view to see her cat in the road. It had crawled under her car in the gararge and she had no idea it was under there. Our animals shadow us and tend to supervise when we do chores, look out for HENRY!

I can no longer go out the door from my kitchen into the garage because of 2 of my 3 cats. I have to open that door just enough to hit the garage door opener and then go outside and into the garage. The screen door helps block them from getting out. The few times they have gotten in the garage, they hide under the car and then there's no way of getting them. I walk to the end where they are and they walk up to the other end, You gotta watch them every second. Little buggers.

Please don't feel too bad. We all know what a loving & caring Mom you are to Sweet Ava & Henry. These types of "unintentional mistakes" happen so easily & fast. At least it had a happy ending, whew
We've had instances when a cat got in our closet without us knowing & next thing .. scratch noise. Same thing happens in our mud room & scratch noise. Most days I take our large black lab, Connie & one of our sr. cats, Ginger out in the back yard together. Connie enjoys playing big sister to the kitties. A couple days ago I turned to pet Connie & Ginger was no where in sight. Both hubby & I searched all over the yards including shrubs, our street, around the corner & onto a busy street in back of us. No Ginger in sight. I called her name the whole time. Got home & there she was at the sliders on the steps to come in. I gave her a "stern what for" & told her I'm happy she's safe at home.

@sceniccoast What a scare that must have been! I would have been so afraid. I'm so glad she was waiting on you when you got home.

It certainly was. I use to always put their harness/leash on when I took them out. Now that they're both 20 yrs. old, Ginger walks slowly & never runs. Fluffy doesn't care to go out as often but the last couple times I noticed she sets down, then will take off a short ways. I keep wondering where she gets all of her energy at her age?? Ginger still hasn't told me where she was hiding that day.
You think maybe they're testing us & know we're thrilled they're home safe & we just need to cuddle them?

@NickNack I had a similar funny thing happen last night. My mini Aussie, Piper, has refused to go outside at night every since about 2 weeks before the Fourth when the fireworks started.
Last night about 10:30, I locked the dog door to outside, on the patio and my other dog and I went to bed. I'm sure I saw Piper head for the bedrooms.
About 2am I became aware of what sounded like distant short yips. At first I thought it was a coyote, then l realized it wasn't distant, it was Piper. Got up and went looking for him. He had gone outside unnoticed and I had locked him out. Boy was he glad to see me. He was so miffed, he wouldn't go to bed with me. Slept in the bathroom. I bet my NextDoor neighbor wasn't too happy.

@Kachina624 Aw, poor Piper! I'm so glad you heard him! That's a very sweet picture of him.
I thought about how I could have locked Henry in the garage all night, too. He usually drinks from the water faucet when I brush my teeth before going to bed, though, so that probably wouldn't happen.

Poor Henry-glad he's safe! Don't beat yourself up-I know it wasn't intentional even though I don't know you, and sometimes things just happen. Just be glad he wasn't out there for long.
@sometimesQVCaddict Yes, I was SO glard he wasn't out there very long!
