Here is the full nutritional info for the Royal Canin diabetic food I could only find the page for the dry food. Not sure if you have only the canned version
http://pets.petsmart.com/guides/prescription-foods/_downloads/feline-diabetic.pdf
According to the link, it's 24% carbs ( metabolized energy)

Hi Jaxs Mom,
I was using the canned food, but I looked all over hte internet can can't find the nutritional information. I am writing to the company to see if they will provide it.
Right now we put Raggies on fancy feast pate, which was suggested.
So far the number have not changed. It is still 584. I have talked to some co-workers about thier vets. I am going to make some calls tonight and interview the vets.
Thank you again for your help.

I took care of a diabetic cat for over 10 years. He wasn't insulin resistant, but nonetheless I had a hard time dealing with this. But he was the love of my life and sadly it was ultimately what did him in. I've never loved a cat more since then! That's just me.

I know nothing about diabetic pets, but I do have some insight into human diabetes. For those of you who use the human insulin on your cats/dogs, can you use the time-release variety, or does it have to be regular only? The reason I ask this is because my husband is insulin-resistant and had a horrible time with regular insulin only when he was first diagnosed. When he switched to the time-release, he was able to keep his sugar much more consistant. I'm wondering if it would work on the cat, too.
photodreamr--I wish you the best with your kitty--he looks just about exactly like my cat! It sounds like you're making progress and finding much more information to help. Also, in regard to finding a lower carb cat food, don't forget the premium store foods. Fancy Feast also has some newer foods that are basically just meat/fish, without a lot of other stuff. They're more expensive than a can, but available at Wal-Mart and cheaper than prescription. You will have to keep track of his kidney function as you go though, although I would suppose that would be part of his regular diabetic testing anyway.
I hope you find a solution and you have your best buddy for a long time. Hang in there with the little guy!

Update....
We went to my regular vet to show how we are administering the insulin. I read an article that might be an issue. We were doing it right, but I had to start somewhere crossing things off the list.
Raggies is beginning to leave some food in his bowl to have a little later. I can't tell you how happy that makes me. It means he is getting enough to eat now and can leave some for later like he aalways did.
His numbers last niight were 584 but today is 490.
Thank you again everyone. If not for you I may have put down a great kitty.
If you think of anything else, please post I have read and reread all of them.
Thank you!

geezerette,
Thank is a great suggestion!! Since my cat is now on human insulin. It would have never occurred to me about time released insulin.
I will let you know what I find out.
Thanks!!

Just to give everone an update as promised. I cam home from work yesterday and Raggies did not come to the door and greet me like he always did. He was laying on the floor and had a hard time getting up. I dropped something (I can't remember what) but it made a loud noise and my other cat bolted, but Raggies just laid in the one spot and particially wagged his tail.
I then knew it was time. It was the hardest decision I had to make, but it was the right one. When we took him to the vet, she asked me if I wanted to hold him through the process, i said no, I don't think I could. But don't you know Raggies knew I need him to be near me...so he jumped up next to me on the couch then let the vet administer the medicine and laid snuggled right beside me like he always did, then he passed on.
He was a great cat and will be missed so much.
Thank you ladies for your help. I feel better that he was feed all he wanted for his last days instead of crying for food.

Photodreamr: My heart goes out to you at the loss of your beloved cat. I have been following this thread and I know how hard you tried your best for him and I am sure he knew that, too, so please keep that in mind during your grieving. Losing a pet is very hard but it will eventually get better and you will find he has a special corner of your heart forever. Please don't forget to take care of yourself now, as well. My very best wishes to you.

I'm so sorry about your Raggies. I do believe that is the hardest decision we as humans have to make. But as you said, he told you that it was his time. It's unfortunate that the beings we choose to bring into our lives and who love us, and we them, so unconditionally don't have a lifespan equal to our own. If love could keep them alive, they'd be with us forever.
You gave him a wonderful life, and I sincerely believe that you'll be with him again. My sympathies.
