Your dog's behavior (the panting, the restlessness, the growling) suggests a potentially serious medical problem, from heart disease to a neurological issue -- you should get him to the vet ASAP.  He's trying to tell you he's hurting badly.

Two months ago, when my dog started similar behavior, I didn't know, she was trying to tell me she was sick.  I stupidly, sought out a "Holistic" vet, who proceeded to give her acupuncture treatments for getting up in the middle of the nite and peeing on the floor.  SHAME ON THE VET for not recogizing, this was a sign that my dog was seriously ill.  I didn't find out until 2 days ago (from another vet), that my dog was in severe renal failure which is irreversible.  My poor little doggie knew she was sick and she was TRYING to tell me.  She was crying out for help.  Sadly, I lost precious time, and wasted two months getting her the wrong treatment.  Amazingly, animals KNOW when they are sick.  They just can't speak our language.  Sad, really.

Considering his advanced age and the panting i would get him to a vet as soon as possible.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

Last year at about this time my 15 yr old Lhasa Apso got sick.   I took her to vet after vet, got different diagnoses and different meds.    The meds made her sicker.    One round of meds made her  comatose.    I spent 4 days on the floor with her keeping her alive.    She finally recovered 75%.    As the meds did not relieve her pain, her kidneys gave out and she refused to eat.    She was helpless and I had to make that terrible decision.    I relive that day constantly.    I told her to go to her first Mom (who died) and who she loved dearly.    It is a terrible thing to go through but you do it because you love them and they depend on you.

I know what you are going through.    I pray for you and Buddy.    HUGS to you.    What you do is out of love and selflessness and love for Buddy.    Prayers, love, and hugs!

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

Holly had a degenerative spinal disease, IVDD.    She was first given a NSAID which made her throw up.    Then she was given 2 meds for pain, including a large dosage of Tramadol, which made her comatose.    She recovered from that overdose and was given a better NSAID, which eventually led to her kidney failure.    There were no more options for her and the pain immobilized her.    I had to help her over.    She was groggy and could no longer move.     I hate that day.
