You need to test periodically to make sure that your dog does not have heartworms. If you give your dog preventative each and every month without fail you might see if your vet would ok not doing the heartworm test. But to confuse this more, most vets are doing a four prong test that includes testing for heartworm, lyme, erlichia and anaplasmosis.
