@Kachina624 wrote:@mousiegirl Heartguard contains Ivermectin, the stuff stupid people were taking to cure covid and thus poisioning themselves. Certain breeds are very sensitive to it and it's recommended they not use it. That's why a vet should do the recommendation.
@Kachina624 Well, she is the one who said I didn't have to use it, but to have the yearly test, so that is what I am doing with my two inside pups.

People may find this interesting.

@mousiegirl You only need the annual test if you're going to use a heartworm preventative. Your vet is shaking you down.

Tri-Heart Plus for dogs up to 25 lbs.
We adopted a little Pom-Chi about 3 years ago. He had heart worm and was very ill. Had to go throught treatments, etc. Don't forgo not treating your dog( akward sentence)
He is fine today, but does have some breathing problems. He sure is a little cutey and very, very loved.

@Kachina624 I will ask next year. There is a girl at the desk who was rude and wouldn't let me speak telling me that it is law and that the vet could use his license, yet this year, a different vet, and she asked me if I wanted the test, better communication with this vet so will discuss it at next check-up, thank you.
I did google and it seems in California this is a fact. I hope never to see that girl again, and now that we have to stay in our vehicles, I havn't in over a year.

Years ago when I questioned my vet about my dog's heartworm med that was a different brand from what I had used elsewhere, he said the one he used was more effective for our area.
LOL. The one he sold you mean.

What do you use for your furbabys for heartworm prevention.
I don't want anything with flea and tick killers included.....
TIA
When I used heartworm, I only used Interceptor, not Interceptor plus. You only have to dose every 45 days. The only reason they have you dose every month is because it is easier to remember. I have had 3 different vets tell me that this is true.
Do you live in a warm area? If it is getting cold, you don't need flea meds. Anything under 57 degrees breaks the egg cycle.
Good luck!
I have never heard that. We are told that it takes a very hard freeze to kill fleas. And some of our worst flea seasons have been in the winter when people thought the fleas were gone.

@mousiegirl do you live in a dessert climate where you don't have mosquitoes? I live on the east coast and it is a problem.

That is alot of difference in weight.
Look into Sentinel. It has two doses for small dogs, 2-10 lbs and 11-25 lbs.
