Yes, I have heard of this breed.  They are banned in some countries.

I think they were recently banned in the UK and people who owned one had to put them down or find a legal place for them.  There was a lot of static about this.

I understand quite a few people have been harmed by this breed.  They sure are scary looking.

I don't understand why any one would want one. They are not worth the risk.  People should stop breeding dangerous breeds and stop selling or rehoming them.

@Carmie.  There was a time when pit bulls were banned in Denver.  That may not still be in effect. I  think such dogs are a status symbol with some men who consider themselves "macho".

My niece has a pit bull.  He is really laid back and is timid.  He hides when we visit.  She also has a pug, he is the alpha and a PIA.  He can be agressive until he knows you.  I know some pits are great dogs, but not all.

As we are campers, we have to be careful what breed of dogs we have.  Campgrounds do not allow certain breeds.  This is mandated by their insurance company.  Pit Bulls are on that list.

My husband unfortunally had to shoot and kill two agressive pit bulls years ago that terrorized our neighborhood.

They jumped over their fence and attacked an elderly neighbor and her little dog.  The injuries were minor, but the poor woman was traumatized really bad.  She sold her house and moved in with her daughter.

The neighbors with the pits were fined, but by then no one would walk past their house because the dogs were agressive and could clear the fence.

One day, I took our two pups out on a leash to do their business in our yard.  We do not have a fence.

Wouldn't you know that the two pitties were running loose and came into our yard.  My 18 lb alpha dog on a leash, starting to bark and there was a standoff.  One of the pits attacked and I started screaming.  My husband ( police officer in uniform) came running out of the house and he was attacked by the 2nd dog.

Long story short, he shot and killed both dogs.  I have mentioned this story a few times on the QVC forums.  It was awful.

A few weeks later, these neighbors had two more pit bulls in their yard.  They were outside with no shelter all day.  I think they took them in at night.  I never went by their house because the dogs would charge the fence and agressively bark and growl.

Finally, they moved.  Thank God.

These XL bullies are way bigger than the average pit bull, usually between 100 and 175 lbs.  I have never seen one in person and hope I never do.  The average person doesn't need this breed.

While camping, we have been attacked by labs...more than once and a small poodle while walking on a leash.  Our dogs have never been injured, but it scared the h*ll out of me.

These dogs were banned from the campground because of their agressive actions.  Any breed can get out of hand, but some breeds can't be stopped or controlled because of their size.

I have no problems with certain breeds being banned from being owned.  Some dogs can't be trusted no matter how good they are treated.

I would never own a breed that is on the agressive list.  Home owner's insurance won't cover them and if they do, it costs a fortune.

It's a giant pit bull. Why does any pit bull attack? I don't care what people say - it's risky owning a pit bull of any size.

Re: Has Anyone Heard of this Breed?

We do not have dogs but I was raised with them in our home. Only one was a breed, a German shephard, the others were Heinz 57s. When we are at a campground I'm always surprised to see some dogs running loose in the campground. It makes me uneasy, whether it's a pitbull or a chihuahua. Many of the campgrounds will not permit dogs over a specific weight or they will list 'unacceptable' breeds. I believe that in many cases it is a requirement of their insurance.

Re: Has Anyone Heard of this Breed?

The neighbors on the side of me bred their female Bully and kept 2 pups (which is illegal here).  I watched the boys try to handle these dogs and the dogs were very strong.  One summer day the dogs managed to burst out the front door and ran up the street.  The neighbor lady 2 houses up was at the curb collecting her mail and the dogs attacked her.

It happened so suddenly.  Her leg was ripped  and her arm injured.  She was screaming so the guy that lives between us ran out to help and his arm got injured also.

Needless to say, she filed a lawsuit against the homeowner.  The dogs have since moved.

In that top picture,  is that the actual, same 'killer dog' of the now deceased owner, that the Police are carrying away?  Cause that dog is TOO SKINNY!!  Look at those ribs!  Each one of his ribs!

Is there any follow up story about whether these specific owner 'killer dogs' happened to show any other signs of abuse, in addition to the ribs?

((added)  His back leg that is visible is too thin also!)

I HATE any Pet abuse!  Makes me go bonkers. Then I try to figure out how to stop it.

The American Bully XL first showed up around the 80s and 90s. Like all bully breeds, they’re a product of breeders wanting a bigger “Pitbull-type” dog. They crossed the American Pit Bull Terrier with the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the first few offspring started the bully breeds.

I followed up on this story:

"The owner, identified as 26-year-old Pedro Ortega, was with his son by a playground when he was mauled by his own three dogs."

~ ~ ~

This "father" couldnt have made even one more WRONG decision then all the ones he made, that culminated on this day.  At least that I could see.   And it could have even been worse!

I think they were the wrong breed esp for a man with family, young family, children.

I think most individual walking person should NOT have:

.. THREE of these kinds of dogs, all out at the same time, all 3, supposedly on leashes,

..  PLUS straddling his young son,

..  PLUS attending an OPEN, public, specifically KIDS, noisy playground.

..  PLUS, I think this guy at least UNDER fed, starved them, at a minimum, which I consider abuse. They were bony, & their fur was all indescribably all wrong. (At least 2 of these 3 dogs I saw)

geesh..   Was a horrible accident, just looking to happen.  And could even have been worse, with the young son, and other neighborhood kids who were at the park at the same time also.

geesh  Stupid, stupid losing decisions of that Dad, all around.

Now  -- a deceased Father, a fatherless young Son that was with his Dad, & saw everything, and sad for those 3 dogs.

And sad for whatever all of the others at the Park saw, took a chance, & participated in , trying to help in the deadly attack.

Soo sad

Hi @Desertdi

Was your sister's Pit Bull a rescue?   If so, there's no telling what the history is that came with a rescue beforehand.    Rescues sometimes can be a real surprise pkg, I would imagine, esp for a Pit Bull.

Hi @Carmie

I'm saddened you, Hubby, the dogs all the neighborhood had to go thru all that! Sounds horribly traumatic. I would be. Are you okay?

I dont think I've ever gotten over the numerous instances of Pet Trauma that I've experienced, at the hands of other people  (& their pets), always.  I can just see my reaction on this particular thread.
