As my dear sweet Carlita continues on in her golden years, she has lost some teeth & as a result her tongue hangs out from time to time.  I didn't know there was an actual name for this condition.  She is 12 years young & I have had to adjust her type of food.  I hope I don't get Hanging Tongue Syndrome, lol!

I adopted a 6 lb black pom from the shelter and she has the same issue.  She doesn't have any teeth so her tongue hangs out all the time.  She's 9 yrs young and I hope she stays for a long time.  She was also debarked, so she only squeaks.  The issue with her tongue is in the summer.  If she's in the sun too long her tongue gets really sore.  I put olive oil on it sometimes if it gets too dry.

When she gives me kisses she does it with a sideways tongue Heart

@Scooby Doo, my Vet also recommended olive oil if needed.  I figured if I give her treats throughout the day, she'll be able to lube up her tongue that way, lol.

@BornToShop, Carlita is so cute. I have a 17 yr old chi and she hasn't lost any teeth yet but my Shad-O was once shiny black and now she has a lot of white.

@qvcfreak, what do you feed your Chi?  Carlita ate dry kibble up until she lost some teeth recently.  She never had wet food as I was advised by my Vet that wet food aids to the loss of teeth as they get older.  Go figure...!

My pug had it even as young adult dog. I can't remember if he did it as a little puppy or not.

Your vet is wrong. My chi eats raw food.

@jaxs mom, I bet if you asked 10 different Vets, there would be 10 different answers, lol.  What brand of raw food do you get or do you make your own?

I've fed prey model raw that we do ourselves for about 10 years.
