A simple and humane solution is to grease the sherpherd's hook with axle grease.
We first tried lard, oil, etc., but the axle grease remains longer after rain, heat etc.
It doen't hurt them at all.....and it's kinda fun to watch them slide back down the pole, LOL!
We have feeders ans bluebird boxes, all on poles, and it works like a charm!

Funny you post this today...
I have been feeding birds for way over 25 yrs.
Suddenly my PO has deceided the 40 lb bag of seed I order from Amazon is to heavy to deliver. I had a run in with a disrespectful mail girl and the central post office gal that also was disrespectful and after thinking it over deceided to quit my wonderful hobby of feeding my birds. especially now in summer ,because they have lots to eat.
So now my babies (and squrriels) are hungry and one deceided to chew up my brand new trash can thinking the seed was inside..........

I use baffles on my feeders and they can't get up the bird feeders. He figured out he could get on a branch and fly over onto the feeder so I repositioned the feeder so he can't do that. Problem solved.
My little squirrel is super cute but he was bogarting all the food and chases off all the birds and chipmunks if i let him.

Wow ..... I'm surprised that the PO would deliver anything that weighs 40 lbs in the first place!
Whenever I order 28 lbs of kitty litter, usually from Ebay, it always comes UPS.
You can always order smaller weights .... I'm sure there are plenty of options to choose from. How can you turn your back on those birdies?

They have delivered my 40lb bag of seed for over 20 yrs with no problem .I at 80 can carry it myself and I asked the mail lady to let me take it from her truck and she refused to let me have it!!!!
It is hard and my heart is breaking because they know and love me and I them. They meet me as soon as I step outside and flock all around me. Bird feeding got me through the loss of my DH and I love the sounds of their chirping and flying around me when they see me comming
But, I am 80 yrs old,so keeping that in mind I think it is best to stop now, while it is summer and food is plentiful and before I am no longer able to continue anyway because of my problem legs walking on ice and snow or I just may die,my heart is not that good.lol.. . Funny,I had asked God just that morning ,if i should start to stop my feeding.I guess He answered me!.... yes!
I have grown a polinateing garden this yr with the help of my bird friends (it came from the seed they left over) and birds ,butteflies, bees and things are happily feeding on it.so I think I will let this teach them the natural way to eat and not depend on feeders ,which probably will no longer be available when i am gone

I found some red hot chili pepper sunflower seeds for birds. That's all I put in my bird feeder. The birds don't mind them at all, but the squirrels can't take the burning sensation in their taste buds. Google it on the web. Also, this bird seed is completely edible for the birds so they leave no mess under the feeder. Rats, etc., don't like it either!!

I love to feed birds but all of my pretty ones were scared off by a bunch of pigeons. Then the Hawks started to swoop in my yard to kill the pigeons. So I stopped feeding them. I still have my birdbath and it is funny watching 3 or 4 pigeons trying to take baths at the same time. I would love to feed the birds, it was one of my daily joys, but my HOA says no to pigeons. I would love to have squirrels here, but i have honestly never seen one. I live in the Phoenix area.

The squirrels and chipmunks get black oil sunflower seeds and a few handfuls of unsalted roasted peanuts in the shell every day. It gets a little pricey (especially the peanuts), but they are so much fun to watch. The squirrels never eat the birdseed, but I fill a gallon size pickle jug with the black oil sunflower seeds every morning and lay it sideways in the elevated feeder.

Thank you, @Yardlie.
