I laughed when I read your post!

 

Our older son's first word was  "Ah-Yee" which was

 

his version of Ollie (Oliver) our collie mix.

 

He was named after Oliver Hardy. 

 

I later met a colleague

with a dog named Oliver.  Of course I asked her the

source, and she said, "Oliver Twist".  I had to laugh

at her literary reference, compared to my story:

 

The summer we got Oliver, we were spending several weeks

with an uncle of my husband and we watched quite a few

Laurel and Hardy black and white episodes. 

 

My collegue said that her Oliver had been a stray she found

in Berkeley--hence Oliver Twist's namesake.
