Re: Found a kitten yesterday

@smoochy   It warms my heart to know that this sweet little fella didn't have to die alone and is no longer suffering.

I hope you feel very good about what you did.

Re: Found a kitten yesterday

So, as I'm online searching for adoptable kittens, I'm discovering that:

the rescues, humane society, spca etc all require applications and appointments (vetting) before deciding if one is suitable for adopting a pet. The sites make a point (over and over like a sledgehammer) that hopeful pet parents may or may not be approved. Really??! Geesh. For example there are a couple of cute kittens at my local Petco, placed there by spca  But I am not allowed to see them until I pass my interview at the spca facility. No wonder people end up buying animals at stores. Or just give up trying.
In the morning I plan to be at the County Animal Control facility to look at kittens and cats. To my knowledge I don't need an appointment. Their adoption fee is only $30 and includes spay/neuter, all vaccs, flea treatment if needed, heart worm prevention, microchip

Sad news. We took kitten to vet. Turned out kitty was a he not a she. The hugely distended belly was ascites (fluid) not worms. Kitten was infected with a 100% fatal disease which was causing his suffering. He had to be euthanized before we left the office, per the veterinarian's recommendation to prevent farther suffering leading to inevitable death.
I held the kitten and kissed his tiny head during the procedure. My husband was a sobbing mess and went to the car. I feel especially bad for Jim as today is his 70th birthday. This was certainly not what we expected.

the good news: I talked him into adopting a kitten from the shelter, one that's healthy, vaccinated, spayed or neutered. We will start looking.

@smoochy

You were incredible in caring for this little one's last moments and to show so much love for a kitty you just met.  And for your husband to be so emotional, he's a quality guy, you are both blessed.

And one of the greatest parts of your story is that you are open to another kitty, that's amaziing as it sounds you / your family had not intended for that to happen.  Boo placed in your life seems to have fostered another kitty rescue?

Re: Found a kitten yesterday

@smoochy - You can also do "word of mouth." Check with your veterinary office and they might know of some. I know one veterinarian in another state works with two women who started a no-kill shelter.

Most shelters will require an application. A lot won't adopt out in October either, because they want to make sure the kitties stay safe.

Check with PetsMart or Petco. The ones near us would be able to recommend some places. Most have adoption events. The ones near us take a lot of kitties in now whose owners can't afford to keep them because of the economy. Also a lot of landlords find abandoned kitties when tenants move out. A lot of these kitties end up at PetsMart or Petco, if they offer this service.

Good luck.  I know you will find the kitty you were meant to love!  Smiley Happy

[ Edited ]

I found several kitten ads with photos on Craigslist. Messaged a couple of them. Will possibly take a look in person.

You all have made me feel SO MUCH BETTER, with your kind, loving and helpful responses. Xoxo 😘

Re: Found a kitten yesterday

Sounds like fate to me, no pressure lol.  I get the "another pet issue" but I think pet lovers can't help it.  I never thought I would have pets in my younger years but one rabbit and 3 dogs later I can't imagine life without one.  We rescued an 8 year old last Christmas and he's brought so much joy and is an hearing aid to our 15 year old dog. Whatever you decide you have given Boo a chance of a life.  Keep us all updated.

Re: Found a kitten yesterday

You did the best possible thing for the poor little fella.

But think hard if you really want to take on a kitten or a cat.

No matter what, you will be spending much more time than you do now, cleaning up.

You have two small dogs.  I would stop at that.

Believe me I see your point. However one of our littles is fast approaching her sixteenth birthday. She is in poor health and declining. Hubby and I will be devastated when she dies, even though we've had it happen to many beloved pets over the years. Lola is special. With this in mind, we adopted a kitten today. He will be a source of love and entertainment as we come to the end of Lola's life. I mean maybe she could live another year but with her conditions it's highly doubtful.
So it probable that before too long, we will have one dog and one cat. No more dogs for sure.
