Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

I would but he doesn't sleep in a particular place (like Katie).

I wanted to tell you.  I think I found the box I'd packed up to send you before the operation on my knees!  Remember, I told you I'd packed up a box but hadn't mailed it.

When I got home my family and friends had reorganized my house and I haven't been able to find anything.

I have at least 2 of those Dots I can't find anywhere, well, you know about my house Cathy...Ha!

Anyway, I'll go back to it and try to get it out to you within a week or so.  It has lots of makeup and stuff like before.

Love you sweet girl!

@Bird mama I'm with you.  I'll follow the rules to some extent but my son-in-law was on a nuclear sub in the navy and wore one of those things to detect radiation.

He'll be home from the Alaska cruise in a few days.  I'll ask him about this.  I think it's wise to observe especially the cat litter and I'll lay something in my lap but I was telling my friend (the vet nurse) I need to get a handle on this....I'm over reacting....

It is hard to tell him no and put my hands up but then he's only on my lap for a few minutes at a time and then gets down (bored....I'm boring...Ha).

Now...if I glow when I turn off the lights....I'll worry....Ha!

You really do need to follow the rules.  If it were me i would keep my cat in the bathroom for the entire time.

Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

@Annabellethecat66: I know exactly how you feel, when you have to do something regarding your pet, but you know he won't be happy about it, & the worst part is that they can't understand why you're doing it! When I had to travel out of state, & had to put my dog in a kennel, it broke my heart. I thought about him every day, feeling abandoned & confused. The vet told me that he stayed curled up at the back of the cage, & only wanted to get up at feeding time! When I picked him up, my big, old, 85 lb. dog came running up to me like a puppy; spinning around, jumping up, & licking me all over my face!! It made me cry, & I believe BOTH our hearts were filled with joy!!! Just remember that soon you'll be snuggling up together! This, too, shall pass....

Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

We went through this with our cat about 10 yrs. ago - after the

ordeal was over, I vowed if one of our other cats needed thyroid removal

I would insist on the surgery!  Our vet referred us to a specialist vet who

went around the country doing the radiation procedure.  They only kept

the cat overnight and sent him home in a disposable cat carrier (so we

could throw away immediately).  On the way home, he was sick and it

seeped through the cardboard onto the back seat!  This concerned me

and I was able to talk to a friend of a friend, who works at the EPA.  She

suggested I call one of the large hospital Nuclear Medicine depts. and

ask about the safety of using the car seat.  I was lucky and got a great

guy (a cat lover) who told me what to do:  cover the seat with a towel

for a week before letting anyone sit in that spot, keeping the cat away

from our other cats for 2 weeks, keeping him isolated in a spare bedroom

with plastic tarp on the hard wood floor (in case he was sick again).  He

did say it was OK to put fecal material from litter box into the trash - in

fact he said that was safer than flushing it down the toilet (as advised

in the instructions).  All in all, it was not something I ever want to go

through again!  Our cat was so affectionate and it was horrible to keep

him sequestered in one room (I rolled treats under the door when he

meowed!!).  Oh, I was also told to wear disposable gloves when we pet

the cat or changed the litter.  But inspite of everything, the cat didn't

seem effected by his 2 weeks alone, and lived out his life with his

usual loving nature. Good luck!

Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

I've managed to keep him out of the bedroom until later this morning when he managed to push open the door.  I'd been laying down (had procedure done on my back yesterday).  I jumped up and physically had to get him out (not easy).

I played with him this morning and that seemed to tire him out (I think he's adjusting to the procedure).  He's in his favorite spot (one of them) under the wooden coffee table where I am.

My son-in-law gets home from his trip tomorrow.  I can't wait to ask him about all of this.  He spent his Navy time on a Nuclear carrier keeping an eye on it.  Either he'll scare me to death or calm me down.  Ha!

If I think about it that they gave him the 'shot' on Monday morning, it will have been 1 week this coming Monday.  Just to be sure I'll probably scoop his litter for 3 weeks with gloves and gather it.

I asked the people about the scoopable litter for the toilet and she said they don't do that anymore.  I wouldn't do that anyway.  I have a septic field which I am very protective of.  Ha!

Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

@momtochloe Well, I figure I'll start glowing any day now...Ha!  Seriously, this is very, very difficult because he likes to sit on my chest and be loved.  It's his favorite thing to do.

I've been home all weekend.  I haven't felt well because on Friday I went to my back Dr and while laying under the x-ray machine he injected my back (again) with steroids.  I usually don't feel well for a few days afterward.

Anyway, he keeps coming to me trying to jump up on my chest.  My friend (the Vet's nurse) said he can be with me but only for a short time and I must put a towel or something under him.  I've been doing that.

I still have to constantly tell him no!  His ears go back and he thinks I'm fussing at him.

He and I have been eating all weekend (steroids for me) and adjustment to medicine for him....Ha!

My son-in-law was on a nuclear ship.  He'll be home on Tuesday (Alaska cruise).  He'll give me a better idea of all of this.

It's been a week tomorrow since he had the shot.  I've never been very good at following orders, but I've done pretty well (surprisingly) with this.

I can tell he doesn't feel well and just wants to be held, so this kills me....After all how many cats want to be held and loved like he does?

Thanks for asking.

Re: Follow Up to My Cat Bill Getting Radiation Treatments

OMG!  OK, so I spent the entire weekend home (with Bill) me being hopped up on the steroids the Dr shot into my back and trying to keep arms length with Bill.

This morning marks 1 week since he got the 'shot'.    I was just going through my paperwork they gave me when I picked him up Thursday.  It says (this is a quote):

"Your cat is still emitting a very small amount of radiation, probably less than you would receive if you took a flight across the country or spent a day at the beach."

What the hay?  I kept thinking (based on what I've been told) he was like some furball of radiation emitting it with every breath!

Don't get me wrong....I GUESS I'm glad I kept him at arms length for at least a week but ......

No longer.  The next time he comes over (like he did over and over this morning) I will not push him away and will let him sit on my lap like he likes to do.

I could tell he didn't feel well all weekend (his body was adjusting to the thyroid treatment) and I couldn't even love him!

OK, just thought I'd let you guys know what's going on in the Annabelle/Bill household.  Oh!  Yes!  Katie the cat is here somewhere....Ha!
