Re: FURBABY THIEVES, ANYONE?

@eddyandme.  I'm sure you're not doing anything wrong.  We have to assume he is comforted by having your scent with him at all times.   Just a quirk.

Re: FURBABY THIEVES, ANYONE?

If you mean a German Shorthaired Pointer, I had one who was the dog of my life.  He was extremely smart and could be very destructive since he was bred to hunt and be able to go for a long time.  Long walks were very helpful along with me learning NOT to leave anything down and available.   These very intelligent dogs who are engineered for a job.  They need mental stimulation and exercise, even into old age.  My Schnapps did walkies until his joints totally fell apart.

I had to learn to adjust to his intelligence.  And yes, they learn how to open doors and all that.  I understand your frustration.

If my dog doesn't like you, neither do I.

Re: FURBABY THIEVES, ANYONE?

My first boy dog used to steal shoes and try to chew them, but no dogs do that since him.

I have a variety of dog toys, especially stuffed animals with squeakers, and my dogs LOVE to play with all of them.

I make sure they know those are THEIR toys.

I try to never leave my clothes/shoes lying around, because we have both cats and dogs, and all clothes can become vulnerable targets!

We do have lots of Dennis Basso blankets and the cats love those.

As others have said, he may really enjoy being connected to your scent since he came to you later in life.  I only bring puppies into my home, so I train them from babyhood.

Re: FURBABY THIEVES, ANYONE?

I have two little dogs who don't bother anything that isn't theirs.

In the past, I had one that would shed paper, tissues and pull TP off of the roll and get into the the waste paper basket if she could.

And I had a Samoyed that would eat socks, leather shoes, handbags and he even swallowed tights.  This dog must have had a digestive system that was made from cast iron.

I know some dogs like to sleep or cuddle with items that smell like their human friends. Perhaps you can sleep with an old shirt or article of clothing and put it where he sleeps.  He just loves you so much and is comforted by your smell.  Give him something that you don't mind losing.

@Carmie I loved "He just loves you so much and is comforted by your smell.  Give him something that you don't mind losing".

Great advice!
