@nana59 , I brush Gabriel almost daily...I like the Zoom Groom the best.  It's a rubber nubby brush, it's incredible what comes off him.  I also use the Furminator occasionally...small blades in a brush that remove hair.

Your sons dog is living a quite ripe age at 14, glad to hear.

yes...14!  they will be devastated when their Luther crosses the bridge.....

@Dazlin

We use the furminator on short haired Kingston and DD's 6 indoor kitties, some long hair, some shorter haired and that thing is amazing, how much under fur it removes!

And they love to be brushed with it, they feel so much cooler!

Re: EXCESSIVE SHEDDING...SUPPLEMENTS??

That's my boy, Gabriel.   Speaking of supplements for shedding,  I read a little coconut oil, and an egg on occasion may help.  I'll do that...its natural,  and I can monitor what he gets.    However,  reading your replies along with what my vet said, it just may be the breed, but those 2 additions shouldn't hurt at all.  I usually reduce his dog food portion by 1/4 cup whenever I add something else.  I have to watch his weight, especially because he has a broken hip.   Thanks everyone for your replies 😊.

Re: EXCESSIVE SHEDDING...SUPPLEMENTS??

Gabriel is beautiful @Dazlin !  You have to be careful and start with a very small amount of coconut oil or he will get diarrhea.  Also, coconut oil is very high in calories and cause a lot of dogs to gain weight.

You might want to Google about the dosage.  I gave it to Ava for a while but didn't see any difference in her coat.

@Dazlin

Multiple Lab Mom here,

Labs are wonderful, but they are notorious shedders!

The old joke about it is:

Labs blow their coats once a year,

from January 1st to December 31st.

I find bathing helps.  Not implying your guy is not clean, just that a bath seems to reduce it for a bit.

I've had goldens and I have always fed them hard boiled eggs often. I think it helps their coats stay healthy.
