It could be a soft tissue injury which wouldn't necessarily show up on an x-ray.

I once had a cat that loved to jump down to the ground from the roof of where I use to live.

One time he landed wrong, and had a soft tissue injury.

He hid under my bed for the rest of the day, and did not want to be bothered.

The next day he was right as rain, but he never again jumped off the roof.

He found another way to get down.
