Can you tell me about them? Would you trust them around children? I'm aware of their temperament and energy but I wonder if anyone here has one in "pet mode".

@monicakm. Did you check the AKC breed characteristics?

@monicakm Do a LOT of research. They are used extensively as K9 officers.

We had one but you have to be an experienced dog Lover to own. By the time we got our Dusty he had 3 other homes.
It took an enormous amount of time to get him trained.
He was excellent around the Kids. We had little to NO background so perhaps he may have been exposed to Kids in one or all of the other 3 Families he was with. He was great with keeping the kids in the yard and enjoyed playing ball but he took his job seriously. We loved him dearly.

My mom had a Groenendael, similar in temperament to a Malinois.
The breed is one-man oriented and very territorial. Good dogs for families with kids as long as they have been raised with the kids. They tend to display high prey drive so that needs special attention, maybe some obedience training.

@monicakm, a close family member had one and he was wonderful with the kids until he became over protective of them and challenged the parents one time too many.
He was re-homed when he was nearly 3 and the kids were 3 and 4.
Great dog and I still regret that at the time I could not take him.

Yes I have. I've been obsessed with them for a couple of years. That's why I was asking if anyone here had one and what their temperament is like. It's one thing to be a highly trained police dog and another to be a family pet...altho they most likely wouldn't make a good family pet for a (now) "elderly" person :/

Yes, I know. I've seen hours and hours of video on the breed. You know, I was about to say we have the perfect set up for an energetic large breed but then it just dawed on me. This dog wouldn't have to climb out of the chain link fenced pasture, he would just jump it and clear it like it was a foot tall LOL And then proceed to take down someone's cow. Nevermind

He sounds wonderful! Was he allowed in the house? I'm def an experienced dog lover. I may have to look at a GSD instead.
