I became aware of the dangers (injury/illness/death) of OVER vaccination about 2 years ago. Dr. John Robb (protectthepets.com) has been fighting tirelessly to change the Connecticut rabies law to permit blood titer testing in lieu of revaccination (in Connecticut: HB 6248). Similar bills are awaiting passage in states all over the US.
From Dr. Robb's website:
"Mission Statement
To allow veterinarians to make decisions that are in the best interest of an animal's health.
To prevent animals from being over-vaccinated, which can lead to illness or death.
To bring awareness to pet owners of the danger of over-vaccination.
To amend the Rabies law."
Please give consideration to this subject. Tons of valuable information at protectthepets.com. Thank you.

Glad you brought this up. Just lost a dog to cancer a few months ago.
Her Oncology Vets say overvaccination is one of the major causes of cancer in dogs. Now through research they are trying to prove it. The first thing they told me was to stop all vaccinations. I had heard about the dangers of overvaccinations before, but it's so difficult getting vets to stop this practice giving all kinds of excuses like your dog won't be able to stay overnight without them. The real reason is loss of money.
My regular vet offered titers for a few months, but owners didn't want to pay the $40 for the test plus cost of the vaccinations if the titers showed they were needed. Couldn't believe that was possible. So, owners couldn't come up with $40 every 1 or two years?
In my state, rabies are required every 2 years but the state next door it's 3 years. Now, something very fishy there. That state doesn't have a rabies problem.
The Oncologists said dogs don't need vaccinations beyond puppy shots throughout their lives including rabies. Their experience is that they are dangerous, causing serious medical conditions. I hope they prove that soon.

Rabies vaccinations are the reason rabies aren’t common. I don’t believe in over vaccinating either but do believe in titers. Titers showed my dog needed her vaccines. I had been giving them every three years as recommended. I was shocked that she needed them.
Edited to say: I vaccinated my kitten with his initial shots but won't do it again. He's an indoor only cat. I do feel he needed the kitten vaccines.

I believe it is true. Vaccines are nothing but foreign protein introduced into the body.
In 2007, my 9-yr-old Cocker Spaniel (Chloe) suddenly developed hemolytic anemia and passed. When I asked my vet if the vaccines/boosters can cause this, he said it was possible.
With my two current spaniels, they only received their initial shots, and no others except the required rabies due to the law. I can still see 'in my mind' my Chloe "passing out" on the porch the day before she died.

My 10 y.o. small dog was just sick for two weeks after having his rabies shot. Happened once before. I will have the titer done on him next year.
He had to be hospitalized overnight and is just now getting back to normal after two weeks and meds.

Thank you so much for bringing this valuable information to the forefront!
I have thought for a long time that the number of vaccinations and other things were not only not necessary in all cases but harmful esp in some breeds.
All veterinarians should be aware and make their pet owners aware of the dangers.
And yes, I believe the automatic routine every pet should get one was based on money.
How many vaccines can a pet take?
The same for children! Is everything in them safe?!
Many pediatricians are limiting the number of vaccinations given at one time now and do not agree with the current schedule for infant/children shots.
No parent or pet parent should just go along with things as they are, without doing their own research.
It just makes me mad that we are not protected or given crucial info about all of this.
Ok I"ll stop now

@queendiva There isn't an accepted titer for rabies since it's required by law. However, your Vet can exempt him from it since he had a reaction. I'm sorry that happened.

I believe the oncologists are right!!! Many immunization specialists indicate that for many dogs, ONLY the initial puppy vaccines are necessary for the life of the dog. For our Golden, I would have titers taken to be absolutely sure of that. Some people never vaccinate; some only do rabies. Our Golden is now 6. Had I known earlier what I know now, I would have titers taken... NO more vaccinations unless titers showed no immunity.
Dr. John Robb, protectthepets.com, offers VERY reasonable titers. Anyone in the country can have their own vet draw the blood and send it to Dr. Robb. Instructions are on his website. I've met Dr. Robb twice. He is an honorable man and an honorable doctor. I'm so sad to say many vets, not all, are only concerned about the money... not the animals. They make a LOT of money from vaccines... then they make more money by treating animals who have problems from vaccines. Very discouraging.
@FoxxeeI'm so very sorry for your loss.

The Morris Foundation is an excellent place to get information about this topic.
You can find them on line.

@seaBreezeI'm quite surprised that your vet said it was possible. Most vehemently deny it. I'm so sorry for your loss. **hugs**
