This was posted on the Facebook page of a Rescue group that I support. It sounds like such a dangerous product. I have never given my dogs rawhide, and this sounds just as bad.
___________________________
I'm writing a public service announcement about this product that has caused the death of a Bordeaux named Dumpling that belonged to ------ and was the love of her life, she has been a long time Village member, I will share with you her words on what happend.
"We are traumatized and devastated this morning. We lost our precious Dumplin' around midnight following an anoxic episode from a "Safe Rawhide Alternative" by Earth Animal. If it isn't hide, it maintained the properties of hide that resulted in swelling of the product. It is advertised as "Provides Hours of Safe, Reliable Enjoyment." I was right her with her and it went south quickly. I can't let another precious animal die in this manner.
She was chewing for so long and enjoying every minute. I was looking right at her and most of it was hanging out of her mouth. Then in an instant she walked down the steps onto the grass. I saw her posture and then I heard the stridor. My son and I had her in the car in 2 minutes and she walked into the ER but she was really obstructed. They pulled it from her oropharynx...there was so much foam and mucus. This is what they retrieved after all of that chewing. She had enjoyed 2 salmon ones and they broke up in about 10-15 minutes. I just hate myself for trusting the heavy safety claims. She began to seize last night when they were letting the sedation wear off and she stopped breathing around midnight".
What a horrible tragedy and such an unnecessary and tragic way to lose your dog. Please be advised of this product that so boldly describes itself as safe. Something like this that stays whole and swells are a disaster waiting to happen, and that's what has happened here. I would like to add in case you are unaware rawhide which this product professes to not be is single handedly the most dangerous "treat" you can ever give a dog. So many dogs have died like this from hide, you have to understand that hide gets gooey, and slippery and dogs easily swallow and choke on them. Not to mention all of the chemicals that are used to process rawhide are pure poison.
Please don't give your dogs this product or anything remotely like it.
Laura's only peace she can try and have through this is to get the word out so no other dogs die this way...
Can I get the village to saturate the internet with shares on this post please?

That would be so sad to watch your beloved pet die just because you tried to, please the dog by giving it a treat. I discontinued rawhide products years ago when one my dogs had bloody diarrhea after chewing on a rawhide chip. They are just bad news in any form. So many of the other things like pig ears and hooves can carry Samonella which can be transferred to a person.

I have no idea what this product is but I don't give any of my dogs products that they can chew on for days or tear off in chunks like Rawhide. Even bully sticks I don't do. My dogs are big and can make quick work of these types of things and I just never ever want to take the risk. Stories like this makes me sad.

@NickNack Thank you for posting. I have never given my dogs any rawhide. There is an alternative called Pork Chomps, but I don't give that either.
My son has a pure bred black German Shepherd, and he gives the dog rawhide and other things like that. The dog got a piece of that rawhide through his throat and it somehow managed to penetrate and get into his neck. The vet couldn't figure out how that happened. The dog had multiple surgeries to clear out the abscess and it took 6 months to heal. I have always told him to NEVER give any of those things, but of course he didn't listen. Would you believe he STILL buys that junk? His girlfriend tells him it is safe. Drives me crazy. If something happens to his dog he will be devastated, He loves that dog, and other than that, takes excellent care.
He doesn't live with me, if he did, as soon as he bought it I'd be throwing it in the trash.

My dogs never get anything like that.

@CatLoverDogsToo I feel your pain. My MIL gives her GSHP rawhides all the time despite my warnings. She also has fed him whole onions (thinks it is funny), peanut m&ms and other toxic things. Makes me ill. She thinks because her previous dog had the same things and still lived to age 14 then it is all just overreaction. She thinks I am ridiculous with my dogs and overprotective. Maybe so but I'd rather be safe than sorry and not see my dogs suffer needlessly because of my own, well, stubborness and, frankly, stupidity.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a sick dog and worry about her all the time. Thank you for posting this and hope it will save other dogs. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

I use this product and my dogs love them, in fact they both enjoyed one today. Any chew product can be a choking risk. It is up to the owners to monitor thier pet and to take pieces away when they become to small. Unlike rawhide this product is completely digestable and a safe chew product. I find it sad that social media can now allow a person to spread misinformation and so many are willing to believe it at face vaule.

@carolgeno This didn't happen to the OP she just related the experience of someone else as a warning.

I gave my dogs a pedigree dentasix every night until one night my little Sheltie was posturing. I rushed her to the ER and she had the dentasix stuck in the back of her throat. I threw all my dentasix away and now they get a baby carrot for a treat. I stick the baby carrots and cucumbers for treats during the day. That way I don't have to worry about my dogs being poisoned or otherwise harmed from unsafe treats.
