DD went to lunch and just called. A woman in a Subaru had a dog in the front seat and poochie was hanging out the window. 2 other dogs in the back.
At a stop light, luckily in a residential section, the dog decided he was going to walk and jumped out of the window dragging his leash. The woman pulled over and jumped out. DD didn't want to spook the dog so she stayed put. The woman grabbed the leash but the dog had it had slipped off and he kept walking.
DD said he went into a yard and laid down while the woman was trying to get his leash on. The woman kept saying, Sam, no, you have to get your leash on. I don't think Sam cared.
I think Sam's days of riding with the wind blowing in his face are over.

Is Petunia ok after her great escape ?

So glad Sam is OK.
I hate to see people driving with the window fully open.........anything could cause the pup to jump out and run. Imagine if it happened while car was moving ~~~ UGH!!!!
I know most dogs love to have the wind blow in their faces while riding in the car. We never open the window more than 5 inches or so for fear of a tragedy

IMO, people who allow their pets to be loose in their vehicle are irresponsible pet owners.
Pets should be in a carrier or be tethered in an approved fashion in moving vehicles. Many dogs are killed in car accidents because they got out of the car and got hit by other cars on the highway. Some dogs have run off and have never been found, especially when people are traveling out of state on vacation.
Dogs riding in cars with their heads out have been blinded by flying debris, bugs or vegetation.
I was in a car accident back in April while driving my new puppy to the Vet's office. My car was totaled. My dog was safe and unhurt. If not in a carrier, she would have been tossed around in the vehicle and been possibly hurt or killed.

@QVCkitty1 She is fine, she is Petunia. Last night she was doing zoomies and being her usual self. She is eating, using the litterbox, running around terrorizing Tess.
Thanks for asking.
I told DD maybe Tess got tired of being annoyed by Petunia and pushed her out the window. lol

I used to drive my convertible with my boyfriend's yellow lab in the car. We often would drive down to San Luis Obispo where he went to school (about a 3 hour drive).
She would always be tethered to the car on a shortened leash - not long enough to jump out. She LOVED having the wind blow all over her.

So true!
When Kingston is in either one of our vehicles, he's tethered in the back seat.
A good friend of mine had a serious auto accident with his dog (untethered) in the passenger seat.
A truck hit him from behind and shoved him into a tree and his dog was thrown to the floorboard when the truck hit the tree head on and crushed it.
My friend nearly died, but his beloved dog did.
